Gemstones - What are they?

What is a gemstone?

A gemstone is a natural stone, i.e. one that is found in nature. It can be a fine stone, a precious stone or an ornamental stone.
Following decree no. 2002-65 of January 14, 2002 on the trade in gemstones and pearls, the term "semi-precious stone" has been abolished as being misleading. To harmonize with the CIBJO (Confédération Internationale de Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des diamants, perles et pierres) nomenclature, these three designations are now all grouped together under the single name of Gemstones.
Gemstones must be derived from a mineral, rock or organic matter! It can be either transparent (allowing light to pass through and see clearly through), translucent (allowing light to pass through but not seeing clearly through) or opaque (not allowing light to pass through at all).

In short, a stone is a gem when :

  • It is composed of natural mineral or organic matter (coral, amber, mother-of-pearl are therefore also gems).
  • It meets specific criteria such as size, color, transparency and hardness.

In the form of pearls, pendants, sequins, bracelets, chips or cabochons... Craftsmen then shape them in their workshops to reveal their full beauty. To better understand the cutting and polishing of fine stones, one of our lapidaries opened the doors of his workshop to us. Discover his know-how in our video!
