
A gemstone is a natural stone, i.e. one that is found in nature. It can be a fine stone, a precious stone or an ornamental stone.
Following decree no. 2002-65 of January 14, 2002 on the trade in gemstones and pearls, the term "semi-precious stone" has been abolished as being misleading. To harmonize with the CIBJO (Confédération Internationale de Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des diamants, perles et pierres) nomenclature, these three designations are now all grouped together under the single name of Gemstones.
Gemstones must be derived from a mineral, rock or organic matter! It can be either transparent (allowing light to pass through and see clearly through), translucent (allowing light to pass through but not seeing clearly through) or opaque (not allowing light to pass through at all).
