Swarovski, PureCrystal, Aurora or Preciosa: which crystal to choose?
In summary

Jewelry crystal is cut glass, created from silica, potash and lead oxide, and is not found in its natural state. Among the brands, Swarovski stands out for its precision and exclusive finishes, while PureCrystal offers the same products with an appellation accessible to all. Aurora and Preciosa, although less well known, also offer quality crystals, each with distinct characteristics suited to jewelry designers.

Are you hesitating between several crystal brands and don't know which one to choose for your next piece of jewelry? You're not alone. Between Swarovski, PureCrystal, Aurora and Preciosa, the differences aren't immediately obvious... and yet they can influence your plans. We'll help you sort them out.

What is jewelry crystal?

Before comparing brands, let's get down to basics. Jewelry crystal is not a natural stone: it's cut glass with a specific structure. It comes from the fusion of silica, potash and lead oxide (the % of lead oxide varies between 11, 24 and 32%, depending on the purity of the crystal). Unlike rock crystal, it is not found in its natural state.

In Europe, and in many countries, "crystal" is a protected designation subject to precise standards (69/493/EEC).

Crystals come in many forms: spinning tops, round beads, cabochons, drops, navettes, hotfix rhinestones, pendants... Each brand has its own specialties, exclusive finishes and range of colors.

PureCrystal: Swarovski crystal for everyone

PureCrystal crystals are exactly the same as Swarovski crystals. The only difference is the name.

Since the purchase of Swarovski crystals is reserved for professionals, we at Perles&Co have created the PureCrystal brand. It enables all designers, even those without professional status, to buy Swarovski crystals. Only the brand name is different.

How to care for crystals

To care for crystals, clean your jewelry gently, for example with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. To ensure they last a long time and retain their brilliance, try to :

  • Avoid contact with chemicals.
  • Store them away from light and in separate compartments to avoid knocks and rubbing.
  • Remove them before going in the water or playing sports.

Can brands be mixed in the same creation?

Absolutely! Since PureCrystal and Swarovski share the same products, they can be used side by side without any problem. Similarly, Aurora and Preciosa fit perfectly into mixed compositions. The most important thing is to ensure consistency of finish and color: a Swarovski Crystal AB will go perfectly with an Aurora crystal with an AB effect.

Preciosa or Swarovski: which is better?

Both are of excellent quality, but cater to different needs. Swarovski excels in the diversity of shapes and finishes; Preciosa is the benchmark for pearly beads and romantic jewelry. The "best" depends on your project.
