4 techniques for setting cabochons

Cabochons are ideal for jewelry-making and customization. But before you start creating gemstone jewelry, there are a few basic techniques you need to know.

There are several ways to set a cabochon:

1. Mounting: the quickest and most accessible technique. Choose a suitable support (ring, stud, notched pendant) whose diameter matches that of your cabochon, apply jewelry glue and leave to dry for 24 hours. Guaranteed results from the first try.
2. Micro-macramé setting: the cabochon is wrapped in a network of knots made with waxed thread or silk. This technique produces handcrafted jewels of unique charm. It requires mastery of a few basic macramé knots, but is accessible after a little practice.
3. Bead setting (weaving): surround your cabochon with Seed beads, Puca beads or Miyuki beads using needle-weaving techniques. A luxurious, highly personalized finish: each stone can have its own bead "case". Consult our chart to find out how many beads to use according to cabochon size.
4. Sutache: braided braids of soutache envelop the cabochon, forming decorative arabesques. This is the most elaborate of the four techniques, but produces jewels of incomparable visual richness: designer necklaces, brooches and spectacular earrings.
