You just finished your bracelet but a few minutes later it breaks? The knot is undone? After only 1 week he is deformed and becomes cowardly? This fact sheet will answer all these questions by giving you techniques and tips to make and keep your elastic band longer.

The knot is undone:

1- The used node is not suitable for the wire

The elastic thread is difficult to tie. Depending on its elasticity and thickness a single double knot will not hold. The ideal is to make a surgeon's knot as explained in the technical sheet: " How to make a bracelet with elastic thread? Then think about tightening the knot by the inside of the bracelet at the end. You can also use the capuchin knot in some cases but you will have to double the elastic thread.

The thread breaks shortly after finishing the bracelet:

2- Metallic or cutting elements damaged wire

The problem does not always come from the elastic thread itself. It is inadvisable to use metal parts such as crimp beads or sharp beads as they may damage the wire even if it seems appropriate in the first place.

3- The bracelet is too tight

You may have also made a bracelet too tight for your wrist. The elastic strap should not squeeze your wrist, but it should not be too loose either. It is also necessary to adapt the size of your bracelet to the potential of elasticity of the wire because a wire little flexible will be able to break when you try to put it on if the bracelet is too fair. Tip: When you put on an elasticated cord bracelet, do not stretch it to put on it. Roll it up to your wrist.

The bracelet relaxes a few days after having finished:

4- The thread has not been pre-stretched

Remember to stretch your elastic thread before making the knot. The elastic threads relax a little at the beginning, pre-stretching the thread so that it does not relax just after finishing it.

5- The chosen thread is not suitable for pearls or creation

Also check that you have used the right thread with the right beads by consulting our technical sheet: " Which elastic thread to choose to make jewelry? ". Beads too heavy for the thread will stretch prematurely, as well as a bracelet too tight on the wrist.

The reasons why the elastic thread is deteriorating:

6- The wire has been exposed to external elements that have weakened it.

Elastic threads are made of plastic qualified elastomer. Elastomers are weakened by different external elements: heat, UV, salt, chemicals, perspiration. To keep your elastic thread as long as possible, follow these tips:

  • Keep your reels of elastic yarn and creations away from heat and light. Do not leave them in the sun in front of a window.
  • Do not wear your elastic wire jewelry to go to the beach because of sea salt.
  • Do not wear perfume or cream on the wrist.
  • Avoid wearing an elastic band if you know that you are going to sweat a lot, especially in the summer, or remove them if they are. This will protect your pearls too.
  • Remove bracelets when washing your hands as soap and limescale can also damage them.
