How to make a macramé feather?

Learn how to make a feather macramé wall decoration. This is a very easy DIY. You can do it again with other strings and colors too. In this tutorial, we made a two-tone feather in fir green and white. Technically, you can even make a rainbow or gradient feather if you have the right yarns. Each knot on the center cord of the feather corresponds to two new strands of yarn. So that gives you an idea of how many times you could change the color of the yarn.

Be careful to use a string that unravels easily so you can make macramé bangs. The 3XL spools from Casasol are perfect for this. They come in dozens of different colors! For a more bohemian effect, you can take the cords used in this tutorial, they are all one main color with small threads of another color inside.

You will also need a brush to comb the macramé bangs. This tool is essential. The trick to keeping the bangs straight and not falling down with the earth's gravity is to use fabric stiffener. This stiffener will darken the color of your yarn, but putting it only on the back of the feather will suffice. The front will not darken. Put a good amount on the knots and the base of the fringe near the knots. Then put some on the rest of the bangs as well, but in smaller quantities. The feather should be very well combed for this step. Remember to put it on a surface protected with plastic.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut 1 m of green rope, fold the last 10 cm of the rope and hang it on the ring with a lark's knot. Tie two more knots to hold it in place.

Step 2

Wrap a piece of tape around the end of the wire and the two wires near the fastener to make it easier to get the wooden beads through. Put the round bead on first, tie a knot to hold it in place. Then add the faceted bead, tie a knot, then the round bead and finish with a knot. You can also reverse the number of round and faceted beads so you only have to buy one round bead. Faceted beads are sold in pairs.

Step 3

Cut 36 pieces of 25 cm green macramé rope. Cross them two by two as shown in the video: Fold them in half. One loop goes under the center rope, the other goes under the loop of the first piece of yarn, over the center rope and the ends of the first piece of rope go into the loop of the second piece. Repeat this step for all the pieces of string.

Step 4

Cut 12 pieces of white rope and repeat step 3. Tie the center string to finish. Place your feather on a surface protected by plastic. Unwind all the ropes and brush them with the special macramé brush.

Step 5

With a large brush, apply fabric hardener to the bangs. They must be brushed flat and in place, because once the hardener dries, they will not move. Insist on the knots, but don't put too much on the bangs so that the liquid doesn't show through because it darkens the color. The covered part will be the back of the feather. Let dry flat for at least 12 hours.

Step 6

Tape two A4 sheets together. Draw the shape of the half nib and cut out the pattern. This will help you to have an identical feather on both sides. Hang your feather so you can cut it more easily with your template.

Bonjour, oui il peut un peu tourner. Il faut pas mal brosser. Vous pouvez le mouiller un peu pour qu'il tourne moins.
