Do you know the narwhal? The narwhal is a marine mammal often referred to as the unicorn of the sea... an ideal animal for beautiful bead weaving!
Cécile has prepared a diagram and tutorial to show you how to create a Miyuki bead brooch on glittery fabric, perfect for your favorite denim shirt or cardigan!
Cécile has chosen fairly natural shades for the weave so that the glittery fabric can enhance the whole. Note that the horn makes this pattern difficult, so you can also opt for the whale version - without the horn!
If you're a beginner, take a look at our bead weaving instruction sheets, after which you won't have to worry about brick stitch weaving with augmentation and reduction.
If you'd like to weave patterns or make woven jewelry again, check out our Miyuki bead weaving tutorials.
STEP 1 - Brick stitch weaving

Start weaving at the arrow. Weave the whole row and continue upwards.
Weave the tail, then the top of the narwhal. You'll need to make a multiple increase at the horn, and then take your time weaving the rest of the horn.
Finish the top, then the bottom of the pattern.
STEP 2 - Mounting on sequined fabric

Draw the outline of your pattern on the back of your sequined fabric using an air-erase pen or pencil (for the tutorial, a thick black felt-tip pen has been used so you can see it clearly).
If the direction of the pattern is important to you, remember to mirror it. Then cut out your shape and glue the weave to it using clear glue. You can stiffen the whole by applying glue to the entire back of the fabric, then add a brooch support.
We'd love to see your version of the nerval... so don't hesitate to send us photos of your creation on our Facebook page, it might inspire others...!
