How to weave brick stitch beads?

Would you like to take advantage of your summer vacations to learn how to weave pretty diagrams using the brick stitch technique? In this tutorial, you'll discover three weaving diagrams by our partner designers Lili Azalée,Coeur Citron and Mademoiselle Lulu. Ideal for this summer, these diagrams are very accessible to beginners. You can wear them as brooches, earrings or even bag jewelry.

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to weave beads with a needle. This is a technique for weaving beads without a loom. There are many different weaving techniques, but the best-known are brickstitch and peyote (and their variations). In these techniques, individual beads are linked together with a thread to progressively create the pattern of a diagram. The diagram can represent a specific element or be an abstract motif, a mantra word, a first name, an astrological sign... etc. The diagrams are made from a blank weaving grid, which you can customize to suit your needs. For beginners, it's best to practice following a weaving diagram before creating your own beaded pattern. So that bead weaving no longer holds any secrets for you, discover our technical sheets to learn bead weaving.

And to help you get inspired and practise, take a look at the many free weaving diagrams and tutorials on our website.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Take a length of thread of about 1m and your needle. You can make additions as you weave. Arrange your beads by color to follow the diagram.

Start your weaving with the longest row of the pattern and follow the diagram, adding beads one after the other. To start your weaving, you can consult our data sheet:"How to start a Brickstitch weave?"

We also invite you to watch our video tutorial on how to learn brick stitch weaving.

Once you've finished your first row, move on to the next one, either left or right, and concentrate on that same side, following the diagram. Not all rows contain the same number of beads. These are increases or decreases, i.e. additions or deletions of beads from one row to the next. If you're not sure how to do this, take a look at our data sheet: How to make increases and decreases in brickstitch?

Step 3

You'll probably need to add thread during weaving. To do this, block the thread that has become too short in the weave itself by zig-zagging between the beads. Pass between the beads and rows so that the thread is not visible. Repeat this operation to integrate your new thread and bring it out at the desired point to continue weaving.

When you've finished weaving your pattern, follow the same procedure to lock your thread into the beads before trimming off the excess. Now that your weaving is complete, you can decide what you'd like to use it for: decoration, brooch, jewelry... it's up to you :)
