DIY Vintage epoxy resin candy box

How to make a box with resin?

This Vintage Candy Box DIY will allow you to make epoxy resin boxes. With one mold, you can make several candy boxes. This is a DIY idea to make guest gifts or decorate your Christmas table. Fill your boxes with fruit jellies, chocolate rocks and other treats to spoil your guests. However, avoid putting unwrapped food in contact with the resin, as it is not food grade plastic. The box is 9 cm in diameter and 8.7 cm high.

This candy box can be used to decorate your living room or your kitchen all year long. You can also put a mini plant inside. Lots of possibilities with this resin box mold! To make a box, you will need 270 ml of two-component epoxy resin. You need 120 ml for the box and 150 ml for the lid. For this tutorial, we colored the resin with alcohol inks. Of course, you can use the resin dyes if you already have some on hand. Remember to use less dye in the lid area, as the lid is thicker and the color appears darker.

These boxes can also be made with Raysin powder which is cheaper than resin, but a little more fragile and non-transparent. This powder looks like plaster but is more solid. If you want to use it as a mini planter, you can coat the surface with outdoor varnish that will prevent water from seeping in.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Before you start:

  • Equip yourself with gloves (usually supplied with the epoxy resin) and organic vapor mask or, if you don't have a mask, ventilate the room.
  • Protect your work surface with plastic.
  • Use a paper cup and disposable spatula to mix the two liquids together.
  • Follow the proportions listed on the resin box to make the mixture.
  • For measurements, pour the two liquids separately into the measuring cups in the kit. These cups can be cleaned afterwards with paper towel and household alcohol.
  • We made the box in two batches so that we could easily mix the resin. First the box, then the lid.
Step 2

Mix the two components well in the cup, then add the dyes and mix again.

Mix for the emerald blue box: 25 turquoise drops + 2 black drops
Lid: 20 turquoise drops + 1 black drop

Mix for the green box: 10 turquoise drops + 2 green drops
Lid: 10 turquoise drops + 2 green drops

Pour the first cup into the box and then prepare the second cup for the lid. Fill the lid almost to the top of the mold.

Lightly tap the molds with your fingers for 1-2 minutes to get as many bubbles up as possible. Burst bubbles on the surface with a lighter or gas lighter.

Let harden in the shade for 48 hours before unmolding.
