DIY Beading tray for bead weaving

How to make a beading tray?

This tutorial shows you a DIY beading tray design with resin and raysin powder. For this, you will need a silicone mold to make a tray. This mold allows the creation of several trays of about 23.5 cm long by 13 cm wide. You can make them for your friends. We also sell a small tray mold, but this one is not deep enough to make a beading tray. We made a nice jewelry tray instead.

This beading tray allows you to carry your weaving in progress from one room to another. Have fun customizing it with our resin decorations and dyes. For example, you can put small dried flowers on the edges or make the tray in gradient colors. Let your imagination run wild.

In this crafting tutorial, we used two different materials for our trays: Two-component epoxy resin and Raysin powder. Raysin powder is a kind of plaster but much more solid and not brittle. However, it is a little more fragile than resin. The tray is likely to break if you drop it on the floor. It is also a rather heavy material. It is nevertheless very interesting for an opaque finish.

Things to know before you order:

  • We started with a project of bi-material trays:
  • It is possible to mix the resin and the raysin powder. We tested replacing the amount of water indicated for the raysin powder by resin in a pendant mold and it works. The result is opaque, shiny and as strong as resin. Don't mix water and resin though.
  • The resin surface of the small tray was made with UV LED resin to go faster, but we don't recommend this method, as it required a large quantity of UV LED resin which is quite expensive. Prefer the epoxy resin and wait 48 hours between each layer necessary to include the dried flowers.
  • The epoxy resin darkens the color of the raysin powder. The light pink becomes more saturated and the white becomes gray. You can see it on the first picture of the large tray. There is a hue delimitation in the pink. UV LED resin does not cause this change in hue or very little, but it is not suitable for decorative projects. However, it can be interesting for jewelry. Want to know the differences between two-component epoxy resin and UV LED resin? Visit our resin data sheets.
  • The large tray requires about 350 ml of resin (mix done).

Tutorial steps

Step 1
DIY Beading tray for bead weaving : Step 1

We made the small tray first and used the leftover Raysin powder mix for the large tray part.

The Raysin powder was measured out with a small disposable coffee cup. Scoop out 3 teacups of powder and pour it into your bowl. Press the dye bottle once quickly to extract the pigments. Mix for a long time with the back of a spoon.

Step 2
DIY Beading tray for bead weaving : Step 2

Clear the workspace so nothing gets in the way and prepare your trays. If you want to do the same effect as the tutorial for the large tray, place one side of the tray on a small object or book to tilt it.

You can add a cup of water when the pigment is perfectly melted to the powder and no more color stains are visible. The powder hardens very quickly once the water is added, so the pigment must be thoroughly mixed before adding the water.

Once the water is added, mix the entire mixture quickly and pour it into the small tray. Then pour the rest into the side of the large pan. Tap the molds to bring up the bubbles.

Step 3

Wait 2 hours before unmolding the small mold and one week in a dry place before pouring resin on it. You can sand the edges and the back of the small tray right away.

Step 4

Do not unmold the large, incomplete tray.

Step 5
DIY Beading tray for bead weaving : Step 5

A week of drying later, you can move on to the resin part. Use the cups provided with the resin kit to mix the two resin components in a large disposable cup or bowl. Start with 120 ml of resin + 60 ml of hardener. Mix well but don't go too fast, this is very important.

You can add more resin later if it is not enough to fill the mold. Put chips and gold flakes in your first mix, mix and pour into the tray. Don't fill the resin all the way to the top because the resin will increase in volume during catalysis and it may leak out of the tray. Our bottom was the victim of this...

Continue the small tray with the remaining resin. Pour a thin layer of resin inside the tray and arrange the dried flowers with a toothpick. Bring them down to the bottom of the tray. Remove the bubbles with the flame of a gas-lighter.

Step 6
DIY Beading tray for bead weaving : Step 6

Wait 48 hours before unmolding. Prepare a small amount of resin again and apply it to the pink surface with a brush in very thin layers, spread well. The light pink surface will darken. Your piece can be placed on a special resin mat. Wait 48 hours for the resin to harden.

Pour the second layer of resin in the small tray to cover the flowers.

Step 7
DIY Beading tray for bead weaving : Step 7

Trace the outline of the tray on a sheet of paper. With a ruler, make a second trace 8 mm from the first one but inside to reduce the size of the template. Cut out a piece of beading mat using your template. Check that it fits perfectly in your tray and cut it back if necessary.
