DIY Resin shell dish with gold leaf inclusion

How to make a shell cup in resin?

This is an easy DIY decoration in epoxy resin. It will only take 15 minutes maximum, then 48 hours of "drying" before unmolding your creation. Once unmoulded, your shell cup will be very solid and you can keep it for several years. The crystal resin used has a UV protection, which greatly reduces its yellowing over time unlike conventional resins. However, avoid storing your shell dish under direct sunlight.

This form of shell cup is very popular on social networks. Perhaps its nostalgic side has something to do with it? In any case, your cup can be used as a trendy resin pocket or as a decoration for your jewellery photos on Instagram and Facebook. Guaranteed effect! Give your interior or your feed* a seaside holiday look.

This resin cup is made with a gold leaf inclusion. You can also add silver leaves, small shells, dried flowers or epoxy coloring. You can also resine your holiday memories like in this Resin Charm Bracelet tutorial.

A feed is an anglicism that designates the editorial line of your account on a social network, represented by all the photos posted.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Put on gloves, protect your eyes and air out the room. Take a cardboard cup and a wooden spoon like the popsicle sticks to make your mixture.

Pour 2x20 ml of liquid A into the cup with the measuring cup and 20 ml of liquid B with the second measuring cup as indicated on the resin box.

Mix the two liquids well in the cup with the stick but avoid adding bubbles so do not mix too vigorously. It is important that the two liquids are well mixed otherwise the resin will remain sticky in some places.

Step 2

Pour the resin inside the mould and tap it a few times to remove any air bubbles. With the stick, add the gold leaves by sliding them inside the mould. Spread them out evenly.

Pass the flame of a lighter over the bubbles to make them disappear. Leave to harden for 48 hours with a piece of paper over the opening of the mould to prevent dust from falling onto the resin. Be careful, the paper must not touch the resin.

You can keep the remaining resin in the freezer. Take it out 15 minutes before using it and mix it to soften it.

Step 3

Gently remove the cup from the mould. You can cut and sand the marks on the cup due to the edges of the mold opening, then put some resin back on it with a brush you don't care for. Clean it with household white vinegar before it hardens.
