DIY Resin dominoes with dried flowers

How to put dried flowers in the resin?

Make your own dominoes set with resin and dried flowers. This is a very easy DIY, but you need to plan ahead, as you'll need to make it in several steps and let the resin cure 48 hours between each step. To summarize, you will pour a first layer of resin up to half of the mold. Then, you will place your flowers very carefully. 48 hours later, you will pour the second layer of resin which will cover the dried flowers. For the more patient, you can even make a third layer of resin 48 hours after the second, to make a nice flat bottom on the back of the dominoes, because the resin shrinks and forms a bowl when it is in thick layer. You can also sand the edges with a nail file or sandpaper and put a little bit of resin to de-opacify the sanded areas.

This time can be shortened if you use UV LED resin which cures under UV lamp in a few minutes, but this resin is much more expensive. Given the volume of resin required, we recommend that you use epoxy resin which is less expensive. Unless, for example, you are only making a few dominoes to use as original knife rests.

This DIY resin can also be made with metallic flakes or other small decorations such as sequins, letter beads, dyes. Be careful, do not put water or wet items in the resin like fresh flowers, because they will rot inside.

This DIY can make a very nice DIY resin gift for Mother's Day or for a birthday.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
DIY Resin dominoes with dried flowers : Step 1

Equip yourself with gloves (usually supplied with the epoxy resin) and an organic vapour mask or, if you don't have a mask, ventilate the room. Protect your work surface with a plastic sheet.

Mix the two liquids according to the proportions indicated on the resin box. Use a paper cup to mix the two liquids together. For measurements, pour the two liquids separately into the measuring cups in the kit. These cups can be cleaned afterwards with paper towels and rubbing alcohol.

Usually, you need to mix 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener. For the first layer of the dominoes, you will need about 120 ml of resin + hardener mixture. Do not mix the resin too vigorously so as not to make too many bubbles, but mix it for at least 2 minutes. If the mixture is not homogeneous, the resin will not harden.

Wait 30 minutes before pouring the resin so that the air bubbles rise to the surface of the cup.

Be aware that the resin can be stored for quite a long time in the freezer. You will need to wait for it to thaw before using it. This can create more bubbles.

Step 2

Pour the resin into the dominoes, making the thickness about the same in each mold. Make a tester to check that the resin is fully cured later, without having to touch your creation and risk damaging it. To make this tester, take a bottle cap and pour a little resin into it.

Place your flowers in the dominoes with the help of a toothpick. Press very lightly on the flowers to make the air bubbles go up.

Step 3

You can try to burst the rest of the bubbles with a gas lighter far from the flowers (with the lighter it will not be very easy, I burned my thumb, so avoid it).

After 48 hours, the resin is normally completely hardened. You can prepare the second layer by mixing 120 ml and pour it gently over the flowers. Wait again 48 h.

Step 4

Pour a third, much thinner layer over the mold to fill in the trough formed by the resin. This step is optional. It just gives a nicer finish. You can also cut with a scalpel and sand the edges. To make a sanded area shiny again, either brush on a thin layer of resin again or sand for a long time with a finer and finer grit.

Wait 48 hours and then remove from the mold. Prepare a very small amount of resin to glue the golden balls. Put a small drop of resin in the holes of the domino with a toothpick. Place the balls with tweezers. Wait another 48 hours.
