Peyote stitch: an essential beading technique

Peyote stitch, also known as peyote weaving, is a needle-beading technique. Today, it is one of the most widely used techniques in DIY jewellery-making thanks to its versatility and the delicate finish it produces.

There are several variations of peyote stitch, each suited to a specific use or shape:

• Even peyote stitch: the easiest variation to learn, made with an even number of beads in the starting row. Ideal for beginners.
• Odd peyote stitch: slightly more technical, it requires a specific technique to close each row when the number of starting beads is odd.
• Circular (or tubular) peyote stitch: used to create beaded tubes, which are widely used for making rings, decorative beads or three-dimensional jewellery.
• Double peyote (2-drop): beads are added in pairs at each stitch, resulting in a wider pattern and a different graphic effect; this is often used for cuffs or intricate designs.
• To get started with peyote weaving, all you need is some basic equipment: seed beads such as Miyuki Delica or Toho Aiko, a fine weaving needle and strong thread (Nymo, Fireline or equivalent).
