Wondering how to make an odd peyote weave? Follow our beginner weaving course to learn the basics of bead needle weaving. This fourth lesson is dedicated to Peyote Impair weaving. How can you tell whether a weave is Peyote Pair or Impair? Count the number of beads across the width of the bracelet. If the number of beads is even (2, 4, 6, 8 etc...), then it's Peyote Pair. If the number of beads is odd, it's Peyote Impair. In the example shown in the video, the bracelet is 11 beads wide. Peyote Impair is the most popular weave for beads in bracelets, as it enables symmetrical patterns to be created across the width.
Peyote Impair is very similar to Peyote Pair in one respect: because of the odd number of beads, you have to use a trick to turn the weave around every other row. There are several techniques for doing this. In this episode, I'll show you the quickest. If you're just starting out, I'd advise you to follow our previous video on how to weave even peyote before odd peyote. In fact, I go into much more detail on the basics of this weaving technique in the first video on Peyote Pair. If you like, you can also start by following Episode 1 on what materials to buy for peyote weaving, and Episode 2 on learning Brick Stitch weaving.
In this video, I also show you how to finish a pearl weave in point. These are called diminutions in Peyote. As with the half-turn every other row technique, there are several ways to make these diminutions. The point finish is generally applied to the Peyote Impair weave and not to the Peyote Pair, as the latter is not symmetrical and the point would not be centered.
The three bracelet models proposed in episodes 2, 3 and 4 of the beginner's weaving course use virtually the same beads and tools. You can buy the beads only once to make all the beaded jewelry in the course. The same applies to Episode 5 on circular Peyote weaving. Be sure to check the bead references used in each episode, as one bracelet requires 5 colors and another 8 colors. To make the odd peyote bracelet, you'll need 6 of the 8 colors. Similarly, you only need one spool of thread to make dozens of bracelets.
