How to knit a blanket?

Want to give a unique and personalized baby gift? The baby blanket is the perfect project to start knitting. A little more substantial to make than a scarf or a headband but not more difficult for all that! It is very popular with new parents. So take the plunge and start this tutorial to learn how to knit a baby blanket. You'll see, whether it's to please yourself or to give as a gift, there is always a great satisfaction in being able to say "I made it".

If you are a beginner in knitting, don't panic! In this step-by-step tutorial, you will learn the basics of knitting: setting up the stitches, knitting the purl stitch, the purl stitch and folding the stitches. And for those who wish to go further, discover all our technical sheets to learn knitting.

Knitted with organic cotton, this baby blanket is easy to care for! In the tutorial, it has been knitted in a mint color. If you want to change colors, please visit our website to discover all the Essential Coton wools available. To make this handmade baby blanket, simply knit the right side and the wrong side to form the cube pattern. Finish with a wide border of purl stitches.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Knitted baby blanket : Step 1

Get a pair of 4.5 mm circular needles with a 60cm cable

Knitting with needles connected by a cable allows you to knit a longer length without difficulty. You knit in the same way as with straight needles. The stitches are in the needle of the left hand at the beginning and gradually, you pass by knitting the stitches on the needle in the right hand.

Make a slip knot, keeping 2m of yarn for the stitches. Place the slipknot on one of your needles. This will be the first stitch.

Make 139 additional stitches using the continental stitch technique (see video if necessary).

Tip: Place markers to prepare for the blanket pattern right from the set-up row. This makes counting easier!

Place 10 stitches (including the slipknot), place a marker, then place a marker every 8 stitches until you have completed 15 times 8 stitches, place a marker, and finish with 10 stitches.

Step 2
Knitted baby blanket : Step 2

Knit all the stitches in the first row right side up, slipping the markers from the left needle to the right needle when you encounter one.

Starting with the second row, slip the first stitch of each row.

Knit 13 more rows in right sides together.

Step 3
Knitted baby blanket : Step 3

All rows are knitted as follows: slip the first stitch, 9 stitches right side up, then you knit 15 times the cube pattern and finish the row with 10 stitches right side up.

Cube pattern:

The explanations are present in row by row in text form as well as in diagram form.

  • Row 1 (right side): Knit all stitches right side up.
  • Row 2 (purl): Knit all stitches purl.
  • Row 3 (right side): 1 stitch right side, 2 stitches purl, 5 stitches right side
  • Row 4 (purl): 5 purl stitches, 2 purl stitches, 1 purl stitch.
  • Row 5 (purl): Knit all stitches purl.
  • Row 6 (purl): Knit all stitches purl.
  • Row 7 (right side): knit 5 stitches right side, 2 stitches purl, 1 stitch right side.
  • Row 8 (purl): 1 stitch purl, 2 stitches purl, 5 stitches purl.

Each square in the diagram represents a stitch. The cube pattern is done in 8 rows: the first row being the row with the 1 at the bottom of the chart. The diagram is read from right to left for the odd rows (right side of the knitting) and from left to right for the even rows (wrong side of the knitting).

You will need to insert a new ball of yarn several times in order to continue your knitting. You can insert a new yarn at the beginning of a row or during a row. To add a new yarn during the row, I suggest you knit a stitch with the old and the new yarn to avoid having a hole. Once the new yarn is added, you leave the old yarn as is for the moment. You will need to bring in the 2 pieces of yarn (old and new) at the end of the work.

You can choose to make the blanket longer by knitting more times the cube pattern. Remember to keep half a ball (about 25 g.) of yarn to make the border.

Step 4
Knitted baby blanket : Step 4

Once you have repeated the cube pattern 18 times in all :

Slip the first stitch of the row and knit a row making only purl stitches. Remove the markers as you encounter them.

Then knit the final border by making 14 rows, slipping the first stitch of each row.

Step 5
Knitted baby blanket : Step 5

Fold over the stitches with the wrong side of the knitting facing you. (refer to the video if needed).

Tip: to fold the stitches over smoothly, you can fold them over using a slightly larger needle than the one you used to knit the blanket

Then tuck in all the yarn ends with a wool needle.

Bonjour,

Bonjour, merci pouir votre message.
