Resin frames with photo paper inclusion

How do I insert a photo into resin?

In this tutorial you will find a step-by-step guide to make small coloured resin frames by inserting a photo in transparent epoxy resin. These small frames can be used as magnets by adding a magnet on the back or simply as small decorative objects to put wherever you want. Have fun making cut-outs of various papers, photos, magazine covers, postcards. Choose your illustrations carefully and don't let them be too thin because the result would be almost transparent in this case the last step of this tutorial would not be the same and would require a thin layer of white tinted resin on the back of the images.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Resin frames with photo paper inclusion : Step 1

Prepare your resin by mixing your two components: take 60 ml of resin and 30 ml of hardener. With this quantity you can make several photo frames. Start by pouring the resin and then the hardener, mix with a stick and wait about 20 minutes before using it. Divide the resin into two cups with more resin on one side than the other.

In the smaller quantity, colour the resin by adding the colouring of your choice, a few drops are enough, the other part is to be kept in the freezer. Fill the frame mould with the coloured resin, do not cover the bottom of the mould but only the frame.

Step 2

The next day, take your clear resin out of the cold and wait 30 minutes for it to thaw. Pour some resin at the bottom of the mold, just a thin film, be careful, check the time it hardens so that it does not shrink and that there is enough to form a transparent screen. Reserve your resin again in the freezer until the next day or more; depending on the ambient temperature of your work room and the degree of humidity the curing time (catalysis) varies.

Step 3

Defrost the resin and then remove your frame from the silicone mould. Cut out your photos or images, the size should be a little larger than the dimensions of the transparent part. Try not to touch the transparent part so as not to leave your fingerprints on it.

Step 4

Pour a little resin on the transparent wall on the hollow side of the part, spread with a stick so that there is no lack. Position your photo or image upside down on the resin you have just poured, press on the photo to expel the air trapped underneath, small bubbles will rise up the sides, the mold being transparent you can gently lift your piece and look underneath to make sure there are no bubbles left on your image. Finish by pouring a small amount of resin on the back of the picture. If you want to turn your photo frame into a magnet, now is the time to add your magnet to this surface.

Wait two days to touch your creation. To protect your resin creation from possible yellowing, leave your creation in the dark for 10 to 15 days, this is valid for all bi-component resin creations.
