Brusho bookmark on Fimo

How to make your own bookmark?

We suggest you create an original page-marker made of polymere colored with Brusho pigments. What are Brusho pigments? They are powdered watercolor pigments that can be diluted with water or wetted with a spray to color paper, wood, cardboard, fabric or polymere.

In this easy tutorial, we'll cover one of the ways to use these watercolor pigments, which are more commonly used in fine art or scrapbooking on paper. A little tip: if you're afraid of pouring too much pigment, use a needle to make a hole in the center of the lid of your pigment jars. All you have to do is tap the back of the jars to use the pigments sparingly and without opening them.
For this easy do-it-yourself bookmark, we've chosen to make vivid patterns with freshly cut tree leaves. But you can use flowers, letters, numbers or other patterns to make the prints on the Fimo pâte.

A small object in our daily lives, the bookmark is also a great idea for a small DIY gift.

Do you love creating with Fimo clay? Read on for our tips and tricks on how to use your polymere pencil to its best advantage:

Fimo is a material that can be used in a variety of ways.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Take some white pâte, run it through the machine à pâte or well étalez it with a roller to get a medium-thick plate. In the photo the dimensions are 10 cm long by 6 wide. Place tree leaves you've just cut on the plate. Roll over the entire surface to press in the leaves and bring out their imprints.

Step 2

It is advisable to use a needle to pierce the center of your Brusho pigment jars without opening the rest. Simply tap on the back of your pots to use.

Step 3

Carefully remove your leaves, then take one jar of Brusho pigments in grey and a second in yellow. Start with the yellow, refine with a few pigments before moving on to the gray color with less.

Step 4

Serve with a spray bottle filled with water. Spray the water onto the pâte polymère plate, press 2 or 3 times. The colors will begin to blend gently, and you can guide them by tilting your plate.

Step 5

Add a few Scarlet red pigments to get touches of orange paint on the yellow. The colors will fade into each other.

Step 6

Take a wipe or paper towel to soak up the paint on the surface. Leave only the paint that fills the hollows of our leaf prints. Leave the watercolor to dry completely.

Step 7
Brusho bookmark on Fimo : Step 7

Cut with a blade your polymère plate to obtain a rectangle approximately 8 cm by 3 cm wide.

Step 8

Once everything is dry, you can have fun shading or adding paint details, this time working in a different way. Put your pigments in small containers, add a few drops of water and paint with a very fine brush. Use gray, for example, around the edges of the leaves to accentuate the relief. You can also color the sides of the rectangle. If you don't have a piercing tool, you can do it now with a toothpick and twist to get a 3 mm hole.

Step 9

First bake for 30 minutes at 120 deg. Wait until the piece has cooled before applying Sculpey liquid polymers to fill the hollows in the piece. Bake for a second time, this time at 150°C, under close supervision, for around 10 minutes. Check that the opacity of the liquid has disappeared, then remove the polymere from the oven.

Step 10

Pierce your bookmark with a3 mm drill bit. Varnish the entire surface and sides with 2 coats of varnish. Wait at least 2 hours before applying the next coat to avoid damaging your varnish.

Step 11

Cut from a lace suédine a length of 30 cm. Fold the lace in 2, pass it through the fold into the bookmark hole, open the loop to pass the cord through, then pull to tighten the tie. Thread a large pompom through the length of the lace, then tie a knot to secure the pompon. Trim off the excess suédine tooth.

The bookmark can now be slipped into a book, just let the pompom slip out of the book.
