Decorated mirror in Cernit polymer clay

How do you add a touch of originality to a mirror?

Want to add an original, ultra-trendy touch to your home decor? In this tutorial, we'll customize a mirror by creating a unique outline in Cernit polymer clay. Inspired by the colorful creations found everywhere on social networks, this DIY is perfect for adding character to your interior.

We'll play with organic shapes and contemporary colors - pastel tones, soft neutrals with autumnal hues - for a result that's as modern as it is artistic. Each mirror becomes a unique piece, both practical and decorative.

Accessible even to beginners, this project allows you to discover or rediscover polymer clay, while creating an eye-catching design object.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Decorated mirror in Cernit polymer clay : Step 1

Take your mirror and place it on a sheet of baking paper. Use a felt-tip pen to outline the mirror so you have a template to fit your polymer clay decorations.

Step 2
Decorated mirror in Cernit polymer clay : Step 2

Heat your polymer clay in your hands, kneading it to make it more malleable.

Insert it into the extruder, trying to make a single strand so as not to create air bubbles or visible joints. It's possible that your string of clay won't be long enough when it comes out of the extruder, in which case don't aim all the way through and put a piece of clay back in. One whole loaf of each color of Cernit clay is enough to make long enough cords.

Once you've created your clay cord, adjust it on your baking paper to give it the desired shape.

Glue the two ends of the clay together, smoothing them out so that you can't see the seam.

Polymer clay is not water-soluble, unlike self-hardening clay. Don't use water to smooth the clay, as this can create bubbles or cracks during firing.

Step 3

Do the same with the other two colors of clay.

Glue the three strings of clay together to solidify your creation.

Step 4
Decorated mirror in Cernit polymer clay : Step 4

Place your creation and the baking paper on the baking tray and bake in a conventional oven at 110° for 30 minutes.

Once baked, leave to cool.

To make your creation shinier, and to smooth out the appearance of your cords as much as possible, you can lightly sand it with sandpaper.

Glue your creation to the mirror. Don't use a hot glue gun, as hot glue won't adhere to glass and the surface will be too smooth. Instead, use Hasulith or E6000 glue.

Congratulations on your finished mirror!
