Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé

How do you achieve the Mokumé polymer technique?

This tutorial was made with brand new cookie cutters on the site, the set used allows to make several sets there are indeed 8 different shapes complementing each other to build necklaces and earrings if you want.

The borrowed technique is called the Mokumé it refers to old craft techniques that are here diverted with the use of polymer clay. It consists in using several colors, here the black and the white are worked in plates that we will superimpose. A silicone texture plate is needed to achieve a relief on the polymer clay, the technique is to scalp with a cutter blade all that is in relief to reveal little by little the color patterns. After cutting the shapes with cookie cutters several steps are necessary to create a little volume before baking your pieces.

Two different assemblies are proposed, one simple, just with rings and another not more complicated but longer, where is used wire for micro-macramé and golden heishis washers.

Both necklaces are hung on your neck after having been fixed on rings a fine chain.

Feel free to show us your inspired creations.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 1

Take white and black dough in large enough quantities to obtain 14 cm by 10 cm sheets. Put the dough in the dough machine at the bottom of the widest notch, you should get two black plates, one thick and the other much thinner, put them in the notch above the thinnest one of the machine. Do the same with the white.

Step 2
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 2

Apply thin pasta to thick pasta, black to white and white to black. Proceed little by little with the help of a roller to be able to drive out the air which would be stuck between the two layers of pastes.

Step 3

Fold each sheet over onto itself and then run them through the dough machine at the thickest notch from the fold.

Step 4

Place the texture plate on one of the plates, press strongly with your fingers all over the surface to fix it, then roll hard but not too hard either. You can gently lift the plate to check if the texture is well done before removing it completely.

Step 5

Take your finest and sharpest blade to scalp all the reliefs of the texture to reveal the pattern, be patient and remove as you go all the little bits that you will remove, try to follow the direction of the pattern it's easier.

Step 6
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 6

Take the white plate, place the cookie cutters where it looks best, press hard to cut the dough.

Step 7
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 7

Take the black plate and remove one piece with each tool and twice the round.

Step 8
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 8

Create a new black plate at a medium pitch on the dough machine. Using the roller, place each of your pieces on the black plate, cutting around them so you can work on them later. Be careful not to trap air between the two layers.

Step 9
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 9

Resume the cutting of each piece with your cookie cutters putting beforehand on the pieces a paper film which will be used to remove easily your shapes of the cookie cutters but also to give a small curved side to your edges.

Step 10
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 10

Bake at 120 degrees for 30 minutes. Sand your pieces in warm soapy water with 800 grit abrasive then move on to 1000 grit. Use micro-mesh to polish to 4000 and 8000 grit at this point your parts are already shiny but if you want more shine you can polish with a flannel disc that fits on the Dremel hose.

Step 11
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 11

Drill your 5 shapes with a hand chuck, be careful the smaller pieces have a hole not on the surface but on the edge, pass the larger rings through each hole to connect them.

Step 12
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 12

Take 50 cm of chain, cut it in two parts, put the last links in the rings, close them. Add a ring on the top of each side and a carabiner.

Step 13
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 13

Drill the second collar with a chuck, making four holes on the center piece and three on the others.

Step 14
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 14

Cut about four 10 cm pieces of micro macramé wire, pass the wire through a hole, make a double knot, tighten. thread 3 heishis beads on the two wires, pass one of them through the hole in front, tighten and make a double knot. do the same thing again three to build your necklace

Step 15
Necklaces with the polymeric technique of mokumé : Step 15

Add rings and chain to the ends of the second necklace in the same way as the first.
