How to make a brick stitch Christmas tree?

With the festive season fast approaching, it's time to get down to preparations. Can't find inspiration for your creations? We've got the solution! For Perles and Co, as every year, it's a 100% DIY Christmas. This tutorial was created for ADN magazines. For the occasion, we've come up with three weaves to personalize your gifts: a pretty tree, a Christmas bauble and a shooting star. These Brick Stitch patterns are simple and won't take long to complete. They can be made by beginners, but we advise you to start with a video tutorial before you get started: you can refer to our Learn Brick Stitch weaving datasheet or, alternatively, to this brickstitch unicorn tutorial.

To make these three weavings, you'll need a few materials: extra-fine Miyuki beading needles and Miyuki Nylon Beading thread B 0.25 mm Gold or Fireline thread 0.10 mm, depending on your preferences. Choose your beads according to the weaving patterns you wish to make.

For the beaded Christmas tree and bauble, you'll need :

  • Miyuki Delica 11/0 Opaque White beads x8g (DB-0200)
  • Miyuki Delica 11/0 Galvanized Semi Mat Mead beads x8g (DB-1153)
  • Miyuki Delica 11/0 Mat Opaque Sea Opal AB x 8g (DB-1595)
  • Miyuki Delica 11/0 Opaque Antique Rose Luster x8g (DB-0210)
  • Miyuki Delica 11/0 Metallic Royal Purple Gold Iris beads x8g (DB-1005)

And for the shooting star bead weaving pattern, only 4 of the 5 bead references are needed. You won't need the Antique Rose DB-0210 beads.

These weaves are in cool tones, but you can use other colors to personalize them, with more traditional tones like green and red for example. These creations are perfect for decorating guest gifts or napkin rings. You can also make them into brooches by gluing a brooch holder to the back. These bead-weaving marvels will amaze your loved ones.

We love seeing your creations, so don't hesitate to send us photos on Facebook or tag us on instagram with #perlesandco!

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 1

Start with the tree. The first part of the weaving is to create the base on which the rest of the weaving will be added. The arrow indicates the location and direction to start weaving. Brick Stitch weaving always begins with the longest line of beads. Cut 1m of thread and string one Royal Purple bead and one Opaque White bead. Turn in the Royal Purple bead and tighten, holding the end of the thread. The two beads should sit side by side.

Step 2

Move the two beads so that they are 10 to 15cm from the end of the thread. Return to the Opaque White bead, then back to the Royal Purple, then to the Opaque White to solidify your weave.

Step 3
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 3

Thread a new Royal Purple bead through the previous Opaque White bead. Tighten and place side by side. Again, make two turns to solidify the weave and pull out the last bead.

Step 4
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 4

Attach all the other beads in the line in the same way. Continue weaving the bottom of the tree before the top. To start the next row of beads, thread the first two beads, i.e. two Royal Purple beads. Pass the needle under the thread connecting the penultimate and penultimate-to-last beads of the first woven row. Then return to the second Royal Purple bead and tighten. Pay attention to the weaving direction: your thread should come out of the first row on the same side as where you add the beads for the second row.

Step 5
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 5

To place the beads side by side correctly, return to the first Royal Purple bead from above, then to the second from below. You've just finished a Brick Stitch decrease.

Step 6
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 6

Continue weaving along the bottom of the tree until you reach the foot. Pass through the beads of the third woven row to get to the right place. String three Gold Plated beads corresponding to the fourth and fifth rows. Return to the first strand and then to the weave. Tighten.

Step 7
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 7

Return to the second Gold Plated bead and start weaving the sixth row with a Brick Stitch augmentation. The technique is similar to the decrease, but you go under the thread connecting the last and penultimate beads instead. You don't need to make an extra turn in the beads to glue them together.

Step 8
Miyuki bead weaving christmas guest gifts : Step 8

For the last bead in the sixth row, thread it through the bead below. Then cross the weave to start weaving the other part of the tree, using what you've learned.

Notes:
When there's only one bead in a row, as for the top of the tree, attach it alone. The thread will be visible on both sides of the bead.
For the Christmas bauble. Attach the two gold beads on either side of the first row before continuing with the rest of the weaving.
To finish your weaving or change thread, thread the thread through the beads, making 3 or 4 diagonals, then cut it flush with the weaving.
