This season, sequins and rhinestones are back in the spotlight. They have to shine, they have to glow, they have to sparkle against the grayness of fall and winter. And we’re no longer content to wear them just for evening events! On the contrary, we’re adding crystal rhinestones everywhere—on everyday outfits, day or night.
And there’s plenty to choose from! There are several types of crystal rhinestones in different sizes, various shapes (round, heart, square, star, fan, triangle…), and a wide range of colors and effects:
Have you ever wondered how to apply iron-on rhinestones? This technical guide will answer your questions by providing all the essential information you need to use hotfix rhinestones.
In fact, heat-activated crystal rhinestones are perfect for customizing clothing, accessories like bags or shoes, and decorative items such as pillows. Create your own ultra-personalized tops and evening clutches that are one-of-a-kind!
Hotfix crystal rhinestones don’t require glue to be attached to fabric. Their flat backs are coated with a heat-activated adhesive, allowing for quick and easy application. This adhesive is activated by heat (applied directly, indirectly, or via ultrasound) to bond to the fabric. Once cooled, the adhesive securely and permanently attaches the crystal components to the base material.
Hotfix rhinestones allow for easy application of Swarovski rhinestones to fabric, as well as to wood, metal, or cardboard.
The adhesive used for these crystal rhinestones is characterized by its wash resistance and ease of care. The temperature, duration, and pressure of application must be adjusted according to the type of fabric substrate.

How do you apply hot-fix rhinestones to fabric? This is a question you may have asked yourself when you wanted to make a carnival costume for your youngest child or a costume for your daughter’s, niece’s, or granddaughter’s ballet recital.
Rhinestones are securely attached to clothing using a heat source. There are several methods for doing this:a rhinestone applicator or an iron.
Heated applicator pens offer a cost-effective solution for heat-sealing embellishments. These hotfix rhinestone applicators come with interchangeable tips ranging from 2 to 9 mm, designed to match the shape of the rhinestones you’re applying.

When applying rhinestones, the tip of the applicator and the tips become very hot. Wait for them to cool down before changing tips.
As a general rule, all glass Hotfix rhinestones can be applied with an iron. However, since an iron offers only limited control over pressure and temperature, it may sometimes be helpful to use a heat press.
The soleplate of the iron must not have holes to allow steam to escape. Uneven pressure and the presence of water droplets and steam will compromise the quality of the application.
Finally, always remember to iron on a firm, flat, and even work surface.

As a general rule, the application time should be long enough to allow the heat to activate the heat-activated adhesive and enable it to penetrate the fibers of the base fabric. It usually takes just a few minutes for the rhinestone to adhere to the base.
However, the required application time when using an iron depends on several factors:
To adapt these settings to your specific application, we recommend conducting preliminary tests on the selected base material. Start at a low temperature so you can gradually increase it as you progress through the testing phases.
It generally takes 24 hours for the heat-activated adhesive to fully cure. Wash the item or perform quality tests after this period to ensure your rhinestones do not come off.
However, not all textiles are recommended. Certain fabrics and special finishes are not suitable for Hotfix application due to their low absorbency.
Here is a list of unsuitable fabric types and finishes:
It may sometimes be helpful to wash the fabric before application to remove any unwanted finishes (particularly softeners) and thereby improve absorbency.
Here are the problems you may encounter and their solutions:
