Which fishing line to choose for jewelry?

In this article, discover a comparative table of nylon yarns available in our catalog. You'll find fishing lines and weaving lines. Some are very similar, others very different. Some are ideal for bead weaving, while others are better suited to bracelets with strung beads.

Below you'll find a first table listing multistrand nylon yarns, followed by a second table with transparent single-strand nylon yarns. Overall, nylon multistrand yarns are thin and ideal for bead weaving. Thick, single-strand yarns are ideal for creating easy bracelets or necklaces with beads simply threaded onto a wire and fitted with a clasp. Thin, transparent monobrins are suitable for very specific creations: bead weaving for earrings that don't require great strength, and for bead embroidery, for example.

Which thread is strongest for needle-bead weaving?

Fireline is a thread called fused braid. It's strong, non-fraying and holds up well over time. There are several levels of strength in the same size. The number in front of LB corresponds to the wire's breaking point. For example, 4 LB represents 1.8 kg. This means that the wire breaks at 1.8 kg of applied tension.

This breaking point is indicated for knot-free wire. Knots weaken threads. Knots are rarely used in bead weaving. The thread is threaded through the beads to trap it, then cut. However, when weaving large glass beads, the thread is too thin and cannot be successfully wedged into the much larger hole in the beads. In this case, knots are sometimes made while adding glue to the knot. The wire is still hidden in the beads.

Fireline thread has one drawback: the knot can slip. We recommend adding a drop of glue to secure it. Not the best choice for loom wires, especially for wide bracelets. Indeed, these bracelets often require the wires to be knotted at the end, and if the knots don't hold, the bracelet may come undone. Fireline is better suited to needle-threaded bracelets or bracelets with few rows of beads. If there are few rows of beads, then all the wires can be caught in the weave instead of knotting.

Which wire is strongest for bead weaving on a loom?

The choice of thread depends on the type of closure you want. Finishing with tubular end caps or a slip knot?

For a strong tubular end finish, we recommend mixing several threads:

  • Outer threads: Use a thick thread such as C-Lon Fine Weight or Linhasita Thread 0.35 mm. These will be placed on the edges of the loom.
  • Intermediate threads: Choose fine, strong threads such as KO, Miyuki Beading Thread, One-G or Dandyline. These will also be tensioned on the loom.
  • Needle thread: Use these same threads or Fireline for extra strength.

This blend ensures strength and durability for your weaving. These are our recommendations. If you only want to buy one, choose KO thread, which is a good compromise and comes in many colors to best match the color of your beads.

Which needles to use with threads for bead weaving?

Refer to this chart: Which thread and needle to choose for bead weaving?

Comparison of transparent nylon threads

Thread size is more important than brand for your project. To choose the right thread size, refer to the third table. The hole in the beads should be at least twice the diameter of the thread.
