How to crimp a macrame stone?

Whether you're setting a stone cabochon on a wall decoration, bracelet or necklace, the macramé technique presented here is identical. Only the size of the cabochon and wires varies.
The principle is simple: whatever the shape of your cabochon, you'll need to "enclose" it with macramé knots on both sides. In other words, the front and back of the cabochon. This way, the cabochon won't move and you can create your macramé around it without worry.

Your cabochon can be round, oval, triangular, rectangular or any other shape. It can be made of gemstone, glass, wood or resin. Your only limits are your imagination! Find all our gemstone cabochons by clicking on the link.

Which macramé knot should I use to set a cabochon?

To set a cabochon, you'll need three different macramé wires. Two wires (pink) will be attached to your support in a parallel fashion, and the third (blue) will be knotted on one wire and then on the other until it reaches a length sufficient to encircle the cabochon. The knot used resembles a vertical rod.
See below for the various steps involved in setting a gemstone.

In addition to these explanatory diagrams, we offer two video tutorials to teach you how to master this macramé stone-setting technique:

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Attach the two "guide" wires. Fold your third wire in half with one side much shorter than the other. Attach this wire to the right wire with a lark's knot. To do this, pass the loop under the right wire and pass the ends of the third wire through the loop.

Step 2

Pull the short piece of yarn out so it doesn't get in the way. With the long wire, go over the left wire, then under it and back to the center by passing the wire over itself.

Step 3

Make sure the width between the two knots is equal to the thickness of the cabochon. The two knots should be on opposite sides of the cabochon.

Step 4

Pass the blue wire under the pink wire, then over it and finally through the loop and tighten.

Step 5

Make the same knot on the other side.

Step 6

Continue to repeat the knot on each pink wire until you have enough length to wrap around the cabochon. Then cut the blue wire a few millimeters from the knots and burn it to melt and secure it to the knot.

Step 7

Tie the wires in pairs at the top and bottom with two knots. Pass the left wire over the right wire and then under it and tighten the knot by pulling the wire up.

Step 8

Finish with a normal knot and then tie the 2 threads on the other side. Readjust the position of the blue knots if necessary so that they are well distributed around the cabochon. Cut and burn the remaining wires or use them for the rest of your creation.

To add two wires to the other side of the cabochon, you can attach a wire folded in half with a lark's knot that you will attach to one of the pink wires between two blue knots.
