How to make Cernit clay earrings?

How to achieve a Mica Shift effect with Cernit Métallic clay?

In this tutorial, you'll discover a new range of Cernit metallic colors called "Métallic". These are 14 new colors, each as beautiful as the next, which are completely saturated with metallic particles and have the particularity of reflecting a maximum amount of light. In this tutorial, we've used turquoise gold and copper with the Mica-shift technique. This technique is only used with metallized polymer clay, the aim being to play with the alignment of the mica particles and create a false semblance of texture on a smooth surface.

We love to see the creations you make using our tutorials as inspiration, so don't hesitate to share them with us on our social networks with #Perles&Co!

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 1

Take a third of the package of gold, turquoise and copper dough. Run each pastry through the pastry machine at the widest notch, fold each plate in half and run them through the M.A.P. several times, perhaps ten times. Next, prepare your texture plates, tapping them to remove any excess powder.

Step 2

Texture your pasta sheets by positioning the texture on the dough. For the transparent texture, use the side that will lift the surface of the dough instead of pushing it down. You'll need to turn your plate a quarter-turn towards you to break the pigment alignment we achieved in the first step. Scalp the raised surface with your flexible blade - it must not be too worn for the project to succeed.

Step 3

Using a 4 cm cutter, take a half-round from each plate color. Cut each one to obtain quarter rounds.

Step 4

Take half a loaf of black paste, pass it through the M.A.P. at the wide notch, and cut a strip of this thick plate. Pass the black plate through the M.A.P. again, but this time at a finer notch, so that the earrings don't feel heavy. We're now making the sole of the jewel.

Step 5

Cut the black plate in two parts, using the edges to align your elements. Start by placing the copper pasta quarters on the thin black plate, then cut an ultra-thin strip from the wide black strip and place it under each copper quarter, pressing them together with the help of your blade. Place the turquoise pasta quarters underneath.

Step 6
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 6

Place baking paper over the entire surface and, using a card, make small circles to evenly smooth the surface and erase the joints of the black strip.

Step 7
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 7

Gather up the leftover black dough and run it through the pastry machine to make a sheet with the widest notch. Use the cookie cutter to cut out 2 rounds, or rather half-rounds, from the black dough. Use the remaining black part to surround the colored half-rounds. Place another layer of baking paper on top to smooth out the edges.

Step 8
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 8

Using the flexible blade, trim the edges of your rounds, leaving a millimetre of black. Refine the black dough to a medium thickness and cut 2 oval shapes from it using a cookie cutter.

Step 9
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 9

Use a needle to make small lines on all your oval shapes. Now bake all your pieces flat in a 120-degree oven. You'll leave the half-moons in metallic paste for 30 minutes, while you'll need to remove the other black pieces after 15 minutes.

Step 10
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 10

Allow the black pieces to cool, then work a piece of opaque white paste into the ovals using a tool. Work the paste into the hollows of the lines, then scrape the surface with your blade to remove any excess white. Return your pieces to the oven for 20 minutes at 120 degrees to bake the white paste.

Step 11
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 11

Now it's time to finish our parts, starting with sanding with 1000 grit abrasive. Work in hot, soapy water, round off any protruding angles and make small rotary movements. Move on to the polishing papers called micro-mesh, respecting their order by starting with the grit with the smallest number and working towards the largest. There's no point in doing them all - you can do about every third one. For small oval shapes, just use 1000 grit and a first micro-mesh to keep the surface matt. A complete finishing of your parts should be done with flannel discs and a suitable tool.

Step 12
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 12

Glue your oval pieces to your half-moons, leaving them slightly protruding.

Step 13
Earrings Cernit Métallic Mica shift effect : Step 13

Drill the top of your earrings with a hand chuck. Pass a 5 mm ring through each hole, then connect the ring to the ear stud.
