How to make an elastic necklace

Want to create an elegant, easy-to-wear piece of jewelry? The elastic necklace with large pearly beads is an excellent DIY jewelry idea that's both simple and fashionable. Highly appreciated for its chic, timeless effect, this type of pearly necklace looks great worn on its own. You can even make three of them and wear them together at an event such as a formal evening or an elegant party. To make it, all you need are a few supplies: large pearly beads, a sturdy elastic thread suited to the size of the beads and a pair of scissors, and jewelry glue. This jewel is perfect for jewelry-making beginners, as it requires no clasps or special tools.

Before starting, you can choose the length of the necklace to suit your preferences: choker, mid-length or long. The most classic is the choker, with an internal diameter of around 40 cm, but it all depends on the style you're going for. As the white pearly beads are 18 mm in diameter, which is quite large, you'll need a sufficient length of wire. The elastic thread makes it easy to string the beads without a needle. Once the beads are strung, simply tie several strong knots, preferably a surgeon's knot, then secure with a drop of jewelry glue. The knot can then be hidden in one of the beads for a clean, aesthetic finish.

Large pearly beads add instant glamour. They go just as well with a white tee-shirt for a casual look as with a dressy outfit for an evening out. This personalized piece of jewelry can be adapted to suit all tastes: you can alternate white and colored beads, add a few metallic pearls or even insert decorative separators to create a unique necklace. This easy tutorial is perfect for learning how to make an elastic necklace and discovering the pleasure of creating your own costume jewelry. See also all our DIY elastic jewelry.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut 1.1 m of elastic thread. Stretch it to loosen it. Elastic threads always relax a little at first. By doing this, you'll prevent the thread from relaxing just after you've finished the collar.

Step 2

Fold the wire in half and place a small clothespin in the middle to prevent the beads from slipping off the wire. Thread your beads onto the lined wire until you reach the desired length. Test it on your neck. The pattern includes 25 beads, but there are 30 in the material (10 per bag). You can add the last 5 if you wish.

Step 3

Remove the clothespin and thread one end of the wire through the loop. Make a surgeon's knot, three times. It's like a normal knot, but instead of wrapping the wire once around the other wire, you wrap it twice.

Step 4

Tighten the knot without fear. Apply jewelry glue and hide the knot in the hole of a bead. Recut the wire ends a few millimeters from the knot. Don't cut too close! Leave the glue to dry for at least 2 hours, and if possible 24 hours, before wearing the jewel.

Bonjour, imaginons que votre poignet fait 16 cm. Ajoutez 2 cm de marge d'aisance. On obtient 18 cm. Maintenant, on calcule le diamètre : 18/pi = 5,73 cm. On ajoute le diamètre d'une perle : 1,8 cm. On obtient 5,73+1,80 = 7,53 cm.
