Would you like to make some graphic jewelry? With this tutorial, you'll be able to easily create a jewelry set with a 3D-effect pattern in polymer clay: a pair of earrings and a long necklace with black mesh chain.
The 3D effect is reminiscent of our grandparents' cement tiles, a highly graphic pattern that's very much in vogue at the moment.
Before starting the tutorial, check out our data sheet: How to make a 3D effect duck in polymer clay?
STEP 1
Cut two slices of 3d-effect cane. On each slice, remove only a few centimeters from one side, so that the patterns on the edge are not automatically crushed. Place the two slices side by side, making sure that the joint is well positioned so as not to lose the 3D effect. Here, one slice has been turned over so that the same-colored diamonds face each other.
Place your slices on black clay, machine-rolled to the widest notch. Place some baking paper on top and, using a rolling pin, make small rotations to erase the seam.
STEP 2
Cut the top edge of your rectangle straight with a hard blade, then the sides. Use the flexible blade to cut a rounded bottom edge. Surround your design with a strip of black clay of the same height.
STEP 3
Repeat the operation with the baking paper to remove the joints between the strip and the design.
Cut again with the blades, leaving just a few millimeters. Bake at 110 degrees for 30 min.
STEP 4
Cut 2 slices of 3D duck. Cut a 3 cm round out of each with the cookie cutter. Using the same tool, cut 1 crescent moon from the top of each round.
STEP 5
Make a sheet of black clay, the same thickness as the circles. Place the black circles in the hollows of the lenses, and remove the seam with baking paper and a rolling pin or card. Remove another black crescent moon, leaving a black strip a few millimeters wide. Bake your pieces for 30 min at 110 degrees.
STEP 6
Sand your pieces under soapy water with 1000-grit sandpaper, then use micro-mesh to polish them. Using a 16 mm drill bit, drill 2 holes at each corner of the top of the necklace, then 5 holes in the center of the bottom. Drill 2 holes at the top of the loops, then 3 at the bottom center.
STEP 7
Cut 3 lengths of chain for each loop, one 5 cm and 2 3 cm. For the necklace, cut one 8 cm chain, 2 7 cm chains and 2 5 cm chains.
STEP 8
Pass a 4mm ring through a link in the center of each length of chain for the loops. The longest length goes in the center. Take 3 cm of chain and pass the ring at the top of the loops through the link at each end. Pass another ring through the chain, but not through a link, connecting this ring to another and then to the support for your loops.
STEP 9
Cut 70 cm of chain. Thread your silver rods onto 2 nails, forming a loop. Use these loops to connect the necklace to the chain. Attach 5mm rings to the holes in the center of the necklace. Pass a 3mm ring through the center of your chain lengths, as you did for the loops.
And there you have it!
We'd love to see your version of this set... so don't hesitate to send us your photos on facebook and by e-mail.
