How to make a Mala bracelet

How to make a mala bracelet?

A mala is a set of beads mounted on a thread that is used in certain religious practices or in the exercise of Yoga for meditation. Classically, they are necklaces composed of 108 beads but several variations are possible, in particular, a bracelet of 21 beads.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut 50 cm of wire. Make a double knot on one side to prevent the beads from falling out. String your beads.

Step 2

Make a double knot on the other end of the thread. Cut a new 40 cm piece of wire. Cross the two ends of the bracelet wire. Tie the new piece of wire to both bracelets with a single knot. Both parts of the new thread should be the same length.

Step 3

Start a macramé overhand knot. To do this, pass the left thread under the two threads of the bracelet, the right thread under the left thread and above the two threads of the bracelet then under the loop formed by the left thread. Tighten the knot without forcing it, the two threads of the bracelet must be able to slide.

Step 4

Now do the opposite: pass the right-hand thread under the two bracelet threads, the left-hand thread under the right-hand thread and above the two bracelet threads and then under the loop formed by the right-hand thread.

Step 5

Continue alternating steps 3 and 4 until you have a knot about 1 cm long.

Step 6

Cut the excess wire at the knot to 2 mm from the knot, being careful not to cut the bracelet wires. Burn the remaining 2 mm by approaching the flame of a lighter little by little to melt them. The goal is to melt the material to stick it to the knot without damaging the knot and the other wires so be careful.

Step 7

Open a ring with two jewellery pliers by rotating the edges and not by spreading them as this would distort the ring. Slide the charm into the ring and close it on the bracelet where you want it. Bring the two edges of the ring together until they touch each other by making back and forth. Here is a video to show you the gesture: How to open a ring to make a jewel?

Bonjour !
