How to make a macramé wall hanging with bangs?

Here's a video tutorial for beginners that will help you create your own macramé hanging. It's made up of several basic macramé knots that you'll learn and put into practice as you follow the step-by-step tutorial. More specifically, there are 3 knots in this video:

  • The lark's knot
  • Macramé overhand knot
  • The oblique baguette knot

It's the arrangement and combination of these knots that allows you to create different patterns. Once you've mastered these knots, you'll be able to create your own macramé hanging patterns. Of course, other knots also exist. We'll introduce you to them in future designs. Check back regularly and subscribe to our pages on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook to keep up to date with their release.

For this DIY, we used a square metal stand as a change from the classic wooden branch. Don't hesitate to vary your supports to create unique macramé decorations. This square metal support is available in white, gold and various sizes. We also have circles, triangles and driftwood sticks for macramé.

In this tutorial we've used 2 colors of natural cotton macramé rope: light gray and white. We have many other colors to suggest to personalize your creation. Some of them have been added to the list of materials at the bottom of the page, and for the others, go to our macramé thread selection.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Hang the top of one of the squares on a bracket or on your wall with a nail and wire. Cut 10 1 m wires in white. Fold them and tie them on either side of the square with larkspur knots. This will give you 10 threads on the top two sides of the square. Make a square knot with the 4 threads in the centre.

Step 2

Then add below the first knot, 2 more square knots using 2 threads from the center and the next 2 on each side. Continue in this way, adding one square knot each time. Once you have finished the line with 5 square knots, repeat the operation but removing one knot from each line to end up with a single knot on the last line. Paint the fringes and cut them again.

Step 3

Cut 6 grey threads of 1 m, fold them in half and hang 3 of them on each side on the square with lark's knots. Braid them until the braid reaches the centre of the square. Gather the 2 braids together. Take a thread from the first one. Make a loop downwards and then a loop upwards with it. Take a thread from the other braid and wrap all the threads with 2 to 3 times tightly. Then pass the end of the thread through the top loop of the first thread. Pull on the bottom loop to bring the top loop down with the end of the thread.

Step 4

Cut 1 grey wire of 1 m and hang it on both sides of the square with the knot shown in the video. Contrary to the video, keep a longer length of wire on the left side because this end of wire has been extended out of camera. A little less than 30 cm. Place on top of it 60 cm grey wire, folded in 2 and hung with lark's knots but in the other direction than shown previously. This aesthetic detail is of no importance but make sure that the direction is the same from one end of the rope to the other. Fill the rope completely with these grey threads. Paint and trim the fringes, trying to be as symmetrical as possible.

Step 5

Cut 8 threads of 4 m, fold them in 2 and tie them on each side of the square with lark's knots. Then tie at least 36 threads of 30 cm on each side. The longest strings will be used to make oblique chopsticks. With these knots we will make rhombuses. Pay attention to the direction of the knotting, putting the video in slow motion if necessary. The knots are made on a main rope which gives the direction. These are the same 2 ropes that go on one side then the other in the pattern. In each diamond you will add a square knot in the center to decorate. Make 7 diamonds on each side.

Step 6

Then join the 2 diamond lines together with the same knot, regardless of the side of the knot. Then make a few more slash knots to finish the pattern with a nice point. Collect several grey scraps of rope or cut new ones to make a pompom. Tie a rope in the centre of these threads and knot a knot a little further on this rope. Wrap another rope around the threads folded in half and knot it to hold it in place. Paint the fringes and cut the tassel. Then pass the tassel rope through a hole in the macramé weave and pass the tassel through the loop to hang it up.
