If you knit all the rows on the right side of the stitch, you will get the moss stitch (but if you use circular needles, alternate a right side row and a wrong side row). It is easier for beginners to start knittingwith the moss stitch.

Place your first row of stitches on one of your two needles.

Stitch the right needle into the stitch, passing it under the left needle.

Pass the thread around the right needle, wrapping it underneath and then over.

Pass the tip of the right needle through the stitch and back over the left needle.

Push the right needle up to drop the stitch from the left needle while holding the others with the left index finger.

You have a new stitch on the right needle.

Knit in this way until the end of the row, all the stitches must pass from the left needle to the right needle.

Then bring the thread back to the right over the tip of the right needle. You have just wrapped the thread around the needle, this is called; making a throw.

Then take the right needle in your right hand, keeping the thread in your hand. You hold the thread and needle together.

Pulling the right needle forward, pass the cast-on through the stitch of the left needle. The right needle will pass back through the stitch and then to the front. Pull enough to form a loop.

Place this loop on the thick part of the needle and bring the left needle out of the stitch.

A stitch has formed on the right needle, and there is one less stitch on the left needle.

For all subsequent stitches, do the following: with the right needle, stitch into the first stitch of the left needle from front to back, entering the stitch from the left of the front strand.

The stitches cross in the stitch and the right needle is under the left needle.

To free your right hand, tuck the right needle under your arm and then pick up the yarn from the ball.

Jog the thread to the left under the tip of the right needle.

Then bring the thread back to the right over the tip of the right needle.

Bring the right needle forward through the stitch again. The cast-on passes through the stitch and loops forward on the right needle.

Place this loop on the thick part of the right needle, after the point, and drop the stitch from the left needle.

A new stitch has been knitted: it is a right side stitch. This stitch is recognizable because it forms a loop on the back of the needle.

Resume from step 13 and knit all the stitches in the row in a row.

When the last stitch is knitted, all the stitches are passed to the right and the left needle is empty.

Turn the right needle over and pick it up with your left hand, pointing to the right. The loops of the stitches will now be in front. The ball of yarn will pass through the loop of the first stitch from top to bottom and come to the front of the needle.
To make a new row, repeat step 4.

Continue the rows in the same way. The stitch you make in this way is called the moss stitch. It is the easiest stitch for beginners because you only need to make one kind of stitch, the right side stitch.
The knitting is done in a back and forth motion and the work must be turned over at the end of each row. This way the loops that form at the feet of the stitches at the back of the right needle, are placed on one side and then on the other of the surface of the fabric. This creates an alternating line of relief and depression.
