Discover in this video tutorial how to make a pair of earrings using Square stitch weaving or free weaving. This is a loomless weaving technique. All you need is a bead-weaving needle to make a Square stitch weave. In this video, you'll learn how to weave beads of different lengths together, and how to make a square weave decrease.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of free weaving?
The advantage of this weaving technique is that there's no need for a loom, so it's less bulky, more economical and uses a single thread. Unlike loom weaving, where you have to tie knots and tuck the many threads into the weave to complete your creation, there are only two ends of thread to wedge into the weave, as with Peyote and Brick Stitch weaves. Square stitch is therefore much easier and more aesthetically pleasing to use for small, delicate creations such as earrings. On the other hand, free weaving is much less regular than loom weaving. So you need to find tricks to make the beads line up better, such as using long beads like Miyuki Bugles, or attaching the beads to a straight support, as in the video.
See also a schematic video on square weaving, also known as free weaving or square weaving without a loom (Square Stitch).
The Miyuki earrings in this video tutorial are made with Delicas 11/0 and Bugles 6 mm. All the primers available in the material list at the bottom of the page are gold filled, i.e. in a material coated with a layer of 12 to 14 carat gold, depending on the product. This layer is much thicker and more resistant than gold plating. However, if you want to reduce the cost of the material, all these primers are also available in classic gold-plated galvanized metal.
