This beginner's tutorial shows you a method to add colored heishi rings to a beaded chain. You will need round head nails and a chain with rings. If you don't know how to use the different nails used in costume jewellery, go to this video technical sheet: Which nails for jewellery to choose?
The round head nails are metal rods with a loop on one side. The beads are threaded onto the nail, then a loop is formed on the other side. This way, it is possible to attach a chain on both sides of the nail.
Heishi beads are round beads. They are made of polymer clay and come in dozens of different colors and sizes. There are also gemstone or ceramic beads. Find the list of materials used in this tutorial at the bottom of the page.

The chain used is composed of open rings and nails on which small golden beads are fixed. To separate the chain, simply open the rings and remove the nails.
Detach 1 piece of chain with 4 nails and keep the 2 rings on each side. Then do the same thing to get two pieces of 3 nails, then 2 pieces of 5 nails. These last two can be made longer depending on your neck size and preferences.
On one of the 5 nail pieces, open the ring and slide the carabiner through, then close the ring.
Prepare the round head nails with the heishi beads. On each nail, thread 11 multicoloured washers. Bend the end of the nail at 90° with a pair of fine-tip pliers. Then, with a round nose pliers, grab the end of the nail and form a loop in the opposite direction of the fold.
Use the nails with the heishi beads to connect the different chain pieces, except the 5-piece chains to each other. The 4-piece chain is in the middle, on either side are the 3-piece chains and on either side are the 5-piece chains.
Place the freshwater pearl on a flat head nail and also form a loop on the loose shank as explained earlier. Place this charm in the centre of the 4-piece chain.
Retrieve a ring from the remaining chain ends and add the pendant to the center. On each side, add a diamond pendant.
