How to make double brickstitch earrings?

Looking for a new back-to-school weaving project? You've come to the right place! In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make earrings using the double brick stitch technique. To complete this project, you won't need a loom, just a weaving needle and weaving thread. For those unfamiliar with the loop brick stitch technique, it's actually a variation on simple brickstitch. Instead of weaving the beads one by one, we weave them two by two. There's nothing complicated about it, don't worry. Just think of the two beads as one. You can even make a triple brick stitch with three beads.

For this tutorial, the beads used are Miyuki Rocailles 11/0. You're free to choose the colors you like, as we have a very wide selection of 11/0 rocailles on the site. To complete this tutorial, first weave the triangle part of the loop. Then, in a second step, weave the beaded bangs. All that's left to do is hang your weave on an ear stud with an open ring, and your pair of pearl ear rings is complete.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Double brick stitch earrings with seed beads : Step 1

Brick stitch weaving (single or double) consists in creating a base on which the rest of the weaving will be positioned. Start with the longest line of the grid. You can weave with either seed beads (irregular) or Miyuki Delicas (calibrated).
The images below illustrate the basic brick stitch technique. To make the earrings in this tutorial, you'll need to use double brick stitch, i.e. weave the beads 2 by 2.

Step 2

Cut 1.5 m of weaving thread and thread it through a needle. Thread a yellow bead and a white bead, then thread through the first yellow bead a second time.

The two beads will lie side by side. Place them 10 cm from the end of the thread.

Step 3

Pass again through the second and then the first bead to solidify the weave. Return to the second bead one last time, then thread a new bead. Return to the second bead and again to the third before adding a new bead. This solidifies the weave each time a new bead is added.

Step 4

Repeat these steps until you have woven the entire first row of the pattern. To start a new row (with decrease, to create the apex of the triangle as you go), thread two beads (or four if you're weaving in double brick stitch) and pass the needle under the thread connecting the two beads of the previous row and up into the last bead(s).

Step 5

To ensure that the beads sit correctly side by side, return to the first bead(s) threaded on this row from the top, before returning to the second bead(s) from the bottom.

Continue weaving, stringing beads one by one (or two by two if you're weaving double brick stitch). Continue in this way, making as many new rows as necessary to obtain the triangle pattern. If your thread becomes too short, block the end of your zigzag thread between the beads already woven. Do the same to start with your new thread, and bring your needle out to where you left off.

Step 6
Double brick stitch earrings with seed beads : Step 6

To make your bangs (once the brick stitch weave is complete), thread your needle through your weave and into one of the end beads. String 2 seed beads, 1 bugle bead, then 5 seed beads and work your way up through the 4th bead and all the other beads in the fringe.

The 5th bead will serve as a stop bead. Place yourself back in the brickstitch base and shift your needle into the side bead, repeating this operation as many times as necessary to complete all the bangs. Once the bangs are complete, lock your zigzag thread inside the weave and trim off any excess.

Step 7

Using a thin, open, round ring, weave through the top of the triangle and attach it to the ear stud ring before closing it with jewelry pliers. You can place a dot of glue on the back of the weave to solidify the assembly.
