How to make a bracelet with colored threads?

In recent years, you have probably seen this type of bracelets made only with colored or shiny threads. This is actually loom weaving. Yes, the same loom you use for your beads. So there is no need to buy special equipment if you are already weaving beads. All you have to do is choose your threads and a needle with an eye big enough for the thread to pass through.

For this model, you will need a strong warp thread that will allow you to make a slip knot at the end. In this case, it is Linhasita 0.75 mm wire. For an even thinner bracelet, you can use 0.5 mm. Linhasita wire is a poissé wire that allows you to create knots easily. Moreover, it melts with the flame of a lighter, so it can be cut and fixed without the use of glue. It is also possible to knot all the wires at the end and glue the whole thing in a magnetic clasp. You will find a clasp reference at the bottom of the page in the variation section.

As for the colored threads, we took Silk thread which has a nice sheen and comes in many colors. You can also use shiny thread, jade thread, other Linhasita thread colors or embroidery thread. The choice is yours!

In the center, for decoration, we have added a small beetle insert. Visit our dividers category to see more styles.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 1

Do not cut the thread from the spool. Attach the Linhasita thread to the loom nail and start placing 8 threads. Cut the thread and remove it from the loom. Start putting the thread on again, but this time wrapping the thread around the log on each side with each round trip. This will extend the length of the thread to make sure you have enough room for the sliding clasp on the bracelet. You should have 5 threads on the loom. Hang the remaining thread on the nail.

Step 2

Measure your wrist size, then take a small ruler. Take off 1 cm from your wrist measurement. With the ruler, center this measurement on the loom so you know where to start and keep the same amount of thread on each side of the bracelet.

Cut 30 cm of silk thread in the color of your choice. Tie it to the warp thread at the point where the bracelet should begin. Pass the needle with the thread under the next chain thread, over the next one, under and over.

Step 3

Turn around and go under the wire, over the next one and so on. Squeeze to bring the warp threads together without forcing.

Step 4
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 4

Continue this back and forth repeating steps 2 and 3 and tighten the warp threads as you go. Also bring the blue threads together with your fingernail.

Step 5
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 5

As you go along, you get a weave like the one in the picture.

Step 6
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 6

To change colors, tie the blue thread onto the warp thread, then tie a new piece of gold thread onto the blue and warp threads at the same time. Start weaving with the gold thread, the blue thread is placed on the back and covered by the gold thread as you go. Cut the blue thread a few millimeters further back if you don't want to start again with this color right away, otherwise keep it uncut under the gold thread.

Step 7
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 7

What is explained in step 6 allows you to easily make a stripe effect as in the photo. This avoids having knots as soon as there is a change of color.

Step 8
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 8

You can do a symmetrical weave, but you don't have to. Check to see if you can reach the middle of the bracelet with the ruler. To make the same width of color bands, use a small ruler or count the rows. If you want to add the small beetle spacer, keep a 1.7 cm strip in the center of the bracelet.

Sew the spacer to the bracelet with a piece of yarn in the same shade as the color strip. Tie a knot at the end of your yarn, thread it through the back of the bracelet, through the ring on the spacer and back through the bracelet. Do this two to three times before tying a knot, cutting the thread and attaching the other ring.

Step 9
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 9

To hide the thread end, you can run it inside the weave for 1 cm then cut it off. Add vinyl glue to all the knots on the back of the weave to make sure they don't come loose.

Step 10
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 10

Once the bracelet is finished, unscrew the wooden logs from the loom to remove the threads. Cut them in half so that you have six equal sized pieces of wire. Then braid them two by two and tie a knot at the end.

Step 11
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 11

Cross the braids and tie a new 20 cm piece of yarn over them. Then make an alternate overhand knot to make a slip knot. Go to this tutorial to see it in more detail if you do not know this technique: Adjustable bracelet tutorial.

Step 12
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 12

Tie a knot just under 1 cm long. Cut the wire ends 4 mm from the knot and burn them to complete the knot. The wire ends should merge with the knot. Add glue between the wire ends and the knot to be sure. Adjust the length of the braids and retie the knot closer if necessary. Put glue on these knots as well.

Step 13
Woven silk thread bracelet with golden scarab insert : Step 13

Add charms to the braids with rings for decoration. You can put glue or varnish on the opening of the rings so they don't come off the braid. If you have UV LED resin, it will be even better.

Bonjour,
