This video shows you how to make your own coloured epoxy resin DIY cabochons with alcohol inks? These inks offer us a wide range of colors more or less sustained with two metallic colors : gold and silver which we must use less than the others because they contain metallic particles which are heavier and which would be likely to settle at the bottom of the mold if we put too much. For this effect it is indispensible to use white in alternation with other colors. Several effects can be obtained depending on the depth of the silicone mould used and the quantity of ink drops deposited. One should not hesitate to make and redo this technique to master as much as possible the rendering of the cabochon.

In this video a little too much ink was used, it would have been necessary that the colors did not spread out to the bottom of the mould so that one can see an effect of depth with lines of ink falling like stalactites. Putting too much ink in a small mould makes the whole surface more or less uniformly coloured with visible streaks.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Prepare your resin mixture by putting one dose of hardener in the bottom of a cup, then add two doses of resin, mix with a stick and pour into a second container to ensure a homogeneous mixture.

Wait for the bubbles to disappear before using the mixture, wait about ten minutes.

Step 2

Fill the cavities of the mould with special silicone cabochons, leaving a millimetre of space to add ink. If bubbles form on the surface, take a lighter and bring the flame closer to the resin to burst the bubbles.

Step 3

Pour two or three drops of inks of different colors then on each of them pour a drop of white alcohol ink then immediately on the white put another color. It is there that it is necessary of the experiment compared to the depth of the mould, by dint of making one knows the number of drops to pour on the resin. I voluntarily reduced the dose by writing this text according to the result obtained on this video.

Step 4

Do not touch the resin for at least two days to make sure that the resin has catalysed well, i.e. hardened, the best being 72 hours for it to set in the heart and to be sure that you will not leave your fingerprints on it. The curing time of the resin is relative to the heat and humidity that can be present in a room, the ideal is to place it in a room between 20 and 25 degrees.
