There are many different types of steel. In the jewelry industry, we mainly use 201, 304, 316, 303 and 430 stainless steels, as well as the lower-carbon versions 304L, 316L and 303L.
What is stainless steel? It's a metal alloy, the characteristics of which you can find on ourstainless steel in jewelry technical data sheet, which is increasingly used in jewelry design.
On our product data sheets, the indication "nickel-free" indicates that the stainless steel product complies with REACH regulations. Although it contains nickel due to its composition, it is not released.
201, 304, 316, 430... There are many different types of stainless steel. Here's a quick guide to the different types of steel:
Just soapy water and a soft cloth and your jewel will be as good as new.
If your component is stained, in this case, opt for baking soda in hot water.
If you want to restore its shine, immerse your stainless steel in hot white vinegar.
For chains, jewelry primers and jewelry components in gold-plated stainless steel (i.e. with a gold or Fine gold plated 24K finish), avoid the acidity of white vinegar or lemon juice.
You'll find everything you need to know about how to clean stainless steel jewelry on our technical data sheet.
Now that you know which stainless steel to choose, find out more about our jewelry primers and stainless steel components for creating stainless steel jewelry.
316L stainless steel is the most resistant to water, especially salt water and daily humidity. It contains molybdenum, an element that greatly improves corrosion resistance and prevents the appearance of rust or stains. In fact, it's the alloy of choice for continuously worn jewelry, watches and parts in frequent contact with water.
304 stainless steel is still very good and solid for conventional use, but performs slightly less well than 316L in damp or chlorinated environments.
304 stainless steel is economical and offers good overall strength, suitable for everyday use. Thanks to the addition of molybdenum, 316 stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion and more suitable for humid or saline environments.
