Gold Filled 14 K - 585 thousandths - or Gold Plated? Gold Filled (laminated gold) and Gold Plated are good alternatives to solid gold, which is not available to every purse. But the choice is yours!
Here are a few points to help you choose.
Gold filling is the treatment of a metal (often based on brass) using a mechanical process to apply a layer of gold alloy of varying titration. The weight of gold alloy corresponds to 1/20 of the total weight of the product.
As with gold, Gold Filled is also available in rose gold.
Diagram explaining the composition of Gold Filled.

It's an alloy of base metals, usually brass, coated with gold (between 12 and 18 carats) using an electrical or chemical process, on a layer at least 3 microns thick.

Gold filling is the treatment of a metal (often brass) using a mechanical process to apply a layer of gold alloy of varying titration. The weight of gold alloy corresponds to 1/20 of the total weight of the product. | As its name suggests, gold plating is applied to a base metal (brass, copper, etc.) or even silver. The gold layer is thinner than on a Gold Filled product. |
For Gold-Filled, we use 14-carat - 585 thousandths gold or 12 K - 500 thousandths gold. | For Gold-Plated, we use gold between 12 and 18 carats, or even 24K. Hence the price difference between Gold-Filled and Gold-Plated. |
Gold filled can oxidize, due to the presence of copper in the 14k - 585 thousandths gold alloy. But unlike gold-filled, the thickness of the gold on the surface means it can be cleaned without fear of removing the gold layer. | Gold-plated will oxidize less and appear brighter, but will still be less resistant to friction than gold-filled. |
Today, we know that it requires a declaration of existence and the keeping of a police book. | Gold plating is subject to the regulations governing the sale of precious metal jewelry: it requires a master hallmark, a declaration of existence and the keeping of a police book. |
In France, gold plating must be at least 3 microns thick to qualify for the "Plaqué Or" label. |
