Gold plating is a goldsmithing technique that consists of covering a base metal (usually brass) with a thin layer of gold between 14 and 18 carats, using a chemical process.
How do I know if a piece of jewelry is gold-plated? According to the French legislation, to benefit from the name "gold plated", the jewel must be covered with a minimum thickness of 3 microns. It may also have a square hallmark with various inscriptions such as the manufacturer's initials or the weight of the gold used.
