Can a crystal be heated?

When creating DIY costume jewelry, it is often recommended to fix the crystals after the polymer clay jewelry has been baked, so as not to damage it.
But leaving the crystal cabochon on the polymer clay during the baking process can be very useful. This allows for greater precision, maintaining the exact shape and desired imprint in the right place.
The solution? Some PureCrystal crystals can be heated at moderate temperatures for short periods. However, particular attention must be paid to crystal specifications to avoid damage.

Crystal temperature resistance

Cut crystal glass

Crystals with no unf oiled surface or translucency can withstand temperatures up to 350°C.

Platinum-foiled crystal

Crystals with platinum fo il (foiled) are more delicate. They can withstand temperatures of up to 160°C for a short time. Prolonged exposure can damage the protective lacquer. The protective function of the silvered mirror may alter the appearance of the crystal.

Crystal with surface effect or translucent

For crystals with surface effects and translucent crystals, it is not possible to specify a certain temperature, as the value differs greatly. The variation in effects and treatments applied to these crystals makes each piece unique in terms of heat tolerance.

Melting point of PureCrystal crystals

The melting point of PureCrystal crystals is around 1200°C, at which temperature glass becomes viscous. It is important to note that PureCrystal crystal glass is neither easily flammable nor a fire accelerant. Above the recommended temperatures, the materials do not burn, but the films and effects may be destroyed.

You can therefore put PureCrystal cabochons in the oven for a short time to integrate them into your DIY creations and make polymer clay jewelry. This is the case for these original earrings or these fancy earrings.

Precautions to take before heating your crystals:

    • Check specifications: Make sure you know their type and characteristics.
    • Heating times: Follow the recommended heating times to avoid damage.
    • Safety: Always handle heated crystals with care to avoid burns and material damage.
