How to make micro-macramé jewelry?

Discover the micro-macramé technique by making these superb earrings from white and purple Nylon wire, faceted beads and a PureCrystal drop.

Macramé is originally a traditional weaving technique using successive lace-like knots. Micro-macramé jewelry is made from a nylon or polyester thread that is lightly coated and a little stiff to ensure a good hold and make it easier to string beads.

Thanks to Laura from The Blue Lark blog for this tutorial, inspired by Makramania.

This technique relies on several basic knots. In this tutorial, you'll use the following knots:

  • Mounting Hitch (MH) = Larkspur knot. The lark's head knot is a basic knot used to mount wires and start work by attaching them to another wire or ring. In this tutorial, we're using a pair of creoles.
  • Double Half Hitch (DHH) = The half-key knot. The half-key knot is also a basic knot used in the macramé technique.
  • Vertical Double Half Hitch (VDHH) = The verticalrodof half-keys or rows of half-keys.
  • Alternating Chain (AC) = chain of alternating half-keys.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 1

Before you start, cut 28 strands of 60cm purple nylon thread and 4 strands of 50cm white nylon thread. Place the macramé board and pins on your workspace.

Pin the creole to your board. Then fold your threads in half and tie a lark's knot to hang the thread on the creole. Repeat this instruction 14 times. Visit our lark's knot datasheet.

Step 2

Place a pin between the first cord and the second cord of the first knot on the left. The first cord (a) is the anchor cord, the second cord (b) is the knot-tying cord. Place the anchor cord over the other cords and tie a half-key knot with the next cord.

Step 3
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 3

Tie 14 half-key knots with the following cords. Repeat on the other side, from right to left. Make a half-key knot to tie both sides.

Step 4
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 4

Attach a white thread to a pin and place the pin on the top right-hand side of the work.

Step 5
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 5

Make 1 vertical baguette of half-keys on the first purple cord.

Step 6
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 6

Make 14 half-key baguette knots with the other cords from right to left.

Step 7
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 7

Place a pin between the first and second cords on the right. Make 15 half-key baguette knots from right to left. Do the same on the other side, from left to right. Then tie a half-key baguette knot.

Step 8
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 8

Place a pin between the 4th and 5th cords. Place the anchor cord on the first four cords and tie 2 half-key rod knots. Make 1 half-key rod knot with the same cord (the 3rd) in the opposite direction, creating a chain of alternating half-keys.

Step 9
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 9

Tie 1 half-key rod knot downwards and 1 half-key rod knot upwards.

Step 10
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 10

Thread one pink and one white bead onto the cords. Cord (a) is the anchoring cord, and (b) is the knotting cord.

Step 11
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 11

Tie a half-key baguette knot with the first cord --- the one with the pink bead.

Step 12
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 12

Tie a half-key baguette knot with the second cord (the one with the white bead).

Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 13

Make 2 half-key rod knots with the following two cords.

Step 20
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 20

Repeat steps 4 to 8 on the other side of the work.

Step 21
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 21

Cord (a) is the anchor cord, (b1) and (b2) are the tie cords. Tie a half-key baguette knot with (b1) and a half-key baguette knot with (b2).

Step 22
Nylon wire micro-macramé earrings with PureCrystal drops : Step 22

Make 1 half-key rod knot on the other row from top left to bottom right. To finish the job, make a half-key rod knot with (b2) on (a2), then change the direction of (a2) from bottom-left to bottom-right. Then change the direction of (b2) again from bottom right to bottom left. Symmetrically repeat the step with strings (a1) and (b1). Cord (a) is the anchoring cord, and (b) is the knotting cord.

Step 23
