To create this trendy and vintage phone accessory you just need to know how to open rings. Although it is important to master the gesture not to deform them, you will see there is nothing very difficult. This tutorial is accessible to everyone, beginner or not in jewelry creation. So don't be afraid to start!
We suggest you to create a phone chain also commonly called phone jewelrychain or phone strap. To make this tutorial you will need :
- 1 chain of large golden links
- about thirty large links of various shapes, sizes and colors
- 2 rivets and/or 2 eyeglass clips and/or 2 carabiner rings
- 2 gold open rings (minimum diameter 10mm)
For the tools you will also need a pair of jewelry pliers (flat tip or round tip, or both) and a hand chuck.
Measure the ideal size of your creation according to the use you want to give it. From this measurement, create 6 lengths (here, about 20-25 cm) that you will alternate during the assembly:
- 3 lengths of metallic gold chain. Open the open rings of the chain with your jewelry pliers. The links are thick and it requires a little force.
- 3 lengths of chain with various thick links. Simply hook the links together through their respective slots. They are all compatible.
Tip You can customize this step to your liking. Some ideas:
- create different lengths between gold chain and large link chain
- reduce the number of pieces to 4 or 2 (in this case you will have an asymmetrical chain with one half only made of gold)(in this case you will have an asymmetrical chain with one half only made of gold chain and the other half of big links)
Next, connect the chain pieces created in the previous step to each other by alternating them. To do this, insert the open links of the gold chain directly into the large colored links. Then close them with your jewelry clips.
Tip The 2 gold snap rings can also be used to connect two pieces. To do this, thread one link from each chain inside the carabiner. This allows you to quickly and easily remove a large piece of chain to make a last minute piece of jewelry. Depending on the length between the two snap rings you can create a necklace or a bracelet.
Still using your jewelry pliers, open the open rings, insert the lobster clasps inside and then pass the rings through each end of your chain. Close the rings with your pliers. Your chain is finished. The carabiner clasps will allow you to hang this chain anywhere you want: bag handle or strap, phone strap or even eyeglass chain.
Using a hand chuck (or a drill) and a 2mm diameter drill bit, drill the bottom left and right corners of your phone shell. Be careful to check that it can be drilled easily. It is preferable that it is flexible.
Insert the lower part of the rivet inside the shell so that the screw thread goes through. Screw the other side of the rivet over the top and tighten. Do the same for the remaining side.
Attach your lobster clasps to your rivets and you're done! Here is the illustrated example of the laptop chain. Ideal to have your hands free but always have it with you.
This accessory can also become an eyewear chain, here is an example. To do this, simply place the glasses clips on your temples and attach the carabiner clasps to them.
You can also consider using this chain as a strap or bag handle. As you can see, your chain can be changed in a few seconds thanks to the carabiners (clasps on the ends and rings inserted in the length of the chain).
