How to crochet a flower

Want to accessorize your bag with a colorful, handcrafted touch? This step-by-step tutorial guides you through the creation of a crochet flower-shapedbag jewel embellished with a thread of pastel pearls. A DIY crochet project that's as sweet to look at as it is to make, perfect for personalizing a handbag and giving it a unique, poetic allure.

This project uses Rico Design's Nilli Nilli yarn from the Ricorumi range. This 100% cotton chenille yarn, with its soft, curly texture, is ideal for crocheting round, textured petals in irresistible pastel colors: white, powder pink, celadon blue, lilac, soft yellow... This tutorial is recommended for crocheters with a good crochet level, as Nilli Nilli, although fine for a chenille yarn, can make reading the stitches tricky. It therefore requires a little experience to crochet with ease and regularity.

It is complemented by a thread of pastel beads: small alphabet beads for a personalized message, and acrylic flower charms. Together, they form a delicate counterpart that sways with every movement of the bag, creating a look that's both girly and handcrafted.

This crochet bag jewel is part of the Perles & Pop collection, a line of colorful, cheerful DIY jewelry that blends crochet, pearls and fantasy. Designed for lovers of handmade accessories, this collection brings together lively, customizable creations, to be worn or given as gifts.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

This tutorial is recommended for crocheters with a good crochet level, as Nilli Nilli, although thin for a chenille yarn, can make reading stitches tricky. It therefore requires a little experience to crochet with ease and regularity.

For the first step, we'll start by crocheting the heart of the flower. This will be two round parts to be sewn together. Start by making a 6-stitch magic circle.

Tip: you can also make a "fake" magic circle. Crochet two stitches in the air and crochet your 6 tight stitches in the first stitch.

Step 2

Round 1: The magic circle of 6 tight meshes (6 meshes).

Round 2: Make 6 increases (two tight meshes in each mesh). You get 12 meshes.

Round 3: One tight link, one increase. You get 18 meshes.

Round 4: Two tight stitches, one increase. You get 24 meshes.

Round 5: Three meshes, an increase. You get 30 meshes.

Round 6: Four meshes, an increase. You get 36 meshes.

Round 7: Five meshes, an increase. You get 42 meshes.

Round 8: Make tight meshes only all round (no increase). You get 42 stitches.

Tie a knot in the last stitch, passing the yarn through the loop and tightening. Leave the yarn long enough (max 30 cm).

Repeat this step to obtain two yellow circles.

Sew the two circles together. Start stuffing when a small opening remains, then close the circles by tying a knot. You can then reshape your heart to fit the padding and make it more harmonious.

Step 3

Next we'll crochet the petals. To be made in 8 or 9 copies. Here I needed 9: 3 violets, 2 pinks, 2 blues and 2 whites.

Round 1: The magic circle of 6 tight stitches (6 stitches).

Round 2: Make 6 increases (two tight meshes in each mesh). You get 12 meshes.

Round 3: One tight link, one increase. You get 18 stitches.

Rounds 4 to 6: Tighten one stitch in each stitch. So 18 meshes per round.

Round 7: Seven meshes, a decrease. You get 16 meshes.

Round 8: Six meshes, a decrease. You get 14 meshes.

Round 9: Five meshes, a decrease. You get 12 stitches.

Add padding to your petal.

Round 10: Four meshes, a decrease. You get 10 meshes. Tie a knot in your stitch and leave some thread for sewing.

Step 4

When your petals are all ready, sew them to the edge of the heart. Your flower is now ready.

You can stop here if you just want to crochet the flower, or you can add the accessories to make a piece of bag jewelry.

Step 5
Crochet flower bag jewelry : Step 5

To accessorize your flower, start by unwinding about 40cm of nylon thread. String the beads randomly as you see fit.

You can also follow the example in the photo.

Step 6

When you're happy with the bead threading, cut the thread and pass one end through the bead to be crushed, then through the wire guard, then back through the bead to be crushed. Do the same with the other end.

Once all the wires are in the bead to be crushed, use flat-nose pliers to crush it, pressing the small pin into the bead. This will lock the wires in place.

Step 7

Open a ring and pass it through a mesh in the top of the petal of your choice. Inside, thread the cable protector and carabiner.

Close the ring and your bag jewel is complete.
