How to make earrings with coiled beads?

Discover how to create beaded drop earrings in a retro chic style inspired by the 80s. This DIY jewelry tutorial guides you through the making of beautiful, sophisticated beaded earrings, perfect for lovers of creative jewelry and handmade creations.

This costume jewelry project uses the technique of winding Miyuki Seed beads 15/0 onto brass drop spacers. Accessible to beginners, this tutorial requires no in-depth knowledge of bead weaving. Thanks to a simple and effective trick, you'll be weaving tubes of coiled beads in no time, creating unique fashion accessories.

The materials required for these DIY earrings include weaving thread, Miyuki Seed beads, suedette for backing, brass drop spacers, ear studs and connecting rings. This versatile beading technique can also be adapted to customize maxi creoles or cover other spacer shapes.
These vintage beaded earrings offer a sophisticated rendering with their multiple concentric Seed beads hoops set on suede, creating a unique effect of volume and texture. The end result combines timeless elegance with a retro trend, perfect for sublimating your everyday outfits or for special occasions.

Ideal for hobbyists and craft jewelry enthusiasts, this tutorial lets you create original creations customized to your tastes by playing with the color combinations of Miyuki beads. Whether you're a beginner in jewelry-making or an experienced amateur, these beaded drop earrings are an accessible and rewarding project that will add a unique touch to your accessories collection.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut about 1 m of weaving thread. Pass it over a needle and tie the end of the thread over the top of the brass drop spacer with a double knot. Thread about 15 cm of beads onto the thread. Thread the last bead 3 times as if it were a holding bead. This will keep the beads in place for the next step.

Step 2

Wrap the bead thread around the spacer, pressing the beads tightly together with each turn. Once all the beads have been wound, thread another 15 cm of beads and repeat steps 1 and 2. Continue until the entire spacer is covered. Tip: For a random mix of beads, make piles of beads by color and thread through them with the needle, regardless of the number of beads strung. You can also mix up the piles to pass through just one.

Step 3

Tie a double knot with the end of the wire at the beginning, then pass it through the previous beads to hide the wire. Cut flush with the beads. Do the same with the other end.

Step 4

For the beaded nail part, cut a new thread if the one you have left is less than 30 cm long and thread it onto a needle. String 4 Seed beads, thread through all the beads a second time, then through the first bead a third time.

Step 5

Stitch in suedette, taking care not to be too close to the edge. Stitch back a few millimeters to return to the bead. Thread a new Seed bead and pass through the second bead of the first round. Thread a seed bead and pass through the third bead of the first round. Stitch into the suedette, then return to the front to attach the third bead to the suedette as well. Complete the other two spaces between the beads of the first round with Seed beads.

Step 6

Stitch in suedette, taking care not to be too close to the edge. Stitch back a few millimeters to return to the bead. Thread a new Seed bead and pass through the second bead of the first round. Thread a seed bead and pass through the third bead of the first round. Stitch into the suedette, then return to the front to attach the third bead to the suedette as well. Complete the other two spaces between the beads of the first round with Seed beads.

Step 7

Thread 17 Seed beads and pass through the first one again to form a loop. Press the loop tightly against the beading suede. Sew the first bead to the suedette. Pass through the next 4 beads and sew the last one to the suedette. Continue until you've secured the circle.

Step 8

String 27 Seed beads for the next circle and secure as in the previous step. Do the same for the last circle of 37 beads. Tie the thread at the back, using previously woven thread or suede. Tie a double knot and cut the thread. Do the same with the other end of the thread.

Step 9

Cut the suede around the beads, taking care not to cut the sewing thread. Glue the suedette to the stud tray. Open the ring and slide in the drop spacer, then the ear stud ring. Close the stud.
