How to make a beaded chain?

In this tutorial, we'll make a thin bracelet with chaîne and natural stone beads. It's a classic, timeless piece of jewelry that you can personalize with all kinds of beads, both gemstone 4 mm as in our example, than with PureCrystal spinning tops. Through our step-by-step video, discover how to make a fine, solid and aesthetic pearl chain. To make our pearl and chain bracelet, you'll need a fine, supple metal wire. Your wire needs to be able to pass three times through the hole in the chosen beads. You can use copper wire, gold filled wire (also known as gold laminate) or 925 silver wire (not yet available in 0.30 mm). Avoid using stainless steel wire, as stainless steel is a hard material that will be difficult to handle when we attach our beads.

You'll also need quality jewelry pliers and précision. If the tip of your flat pliers can't grasp the wire end, then you'll have trouble completing this tutorial. If you have jewelry pliers, check that the tip of your pliers can easily grasp and lock a piece of copper wire, or sewing thread. If you don't yet have the tools you need to make jewelry, we recommend our comprehensive tool kit.

At the bottom of the page, you'll find a selection of products for making this Tourmaline bracelet. The first part corresponds to the products used in the example. In the "product variations" section, you'll find products for making the same bracelet in different metals: Gold filled, Silver 925 or silver plated, and fine silver plated. Choose the rings and clasp according to the metal of the chain, because, for example, 925 silver rings will not be compatible with silver-plated chains. So if you choose the 925 silver chain, take the 925 silver rings and the 925 silver clasp. As said in the video, the 925 silver and gold filled chains are larger than the example for designers who think they won't be able to thread a chain as small as the one used in the video.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut two small pieces of 1.5 cm chaîne and a 6 cm piece of copper wire. Thread the copper wire through the first ring of the chaîne. Thread a Tourmaline bead. Pass the copper wire through the first link of the other chain.

Step 2

Pass the end of the thread through the bead on both sides. Grab each end with a different pair of pliers and pull gently until the loops are very small, but still visible.

Step 3

Attract the loop and chain with the flat pliers, and wrap the piece of wire around the loop. Make two turns. Do the same on the other side. Then cut off the end of the wire, and flatten it down against the loop.

Step 4

Repair steps 1 to 3 until you have created a beaded chain long enough for your bracelet.

Step 5

If you're using the thin chain shown in the example, secure the clasp with a first ring, then use a second ring to pass through the penultimate link and the clasp to secure the attachment. Do the same on the other side. If you're using a larger chain and links, it won't be necessary to double the rings.

Bonjour,
