How to make earrings without jewelry clips?

Customize this pair of chain ear rings with small mother-of-pearl flower beads and miyuki pearls. You won't need jewelry pliers or any knowledge of pearl weaving to make these earrings. You'll just need good eyesight and a little dexterity to thread the wire through the chain's tiny links.

You may be wondering how these earrings work? Pass the pin through the ear hole and slide the chain to the middle of the bridge-shaped part. The chain is then left hanging on both sides of the ear. This explains why the chain is so delicate. Remember also that, logically, nothing should be added to the part of the chain connected to the stem and bridge. Only one side of the chain is customizable.

To decorate our gold-plated stainless steel earrings, we'll tie the flowers and pearls to the chain. The heart of the flowers is made with Miyuki 15/0 seed beads and Miyuki triangle spacers. This chain is very thin, so you'll need tiny size 13 needles to pass the thread through, or simply do it by hand. The thread used here is fireline 0.10 mm, because it's fine and strong. You can still use weaving or sewing thread, but bear in mind that these will be more fragile. As fireline thread is white (even though it's noted as transparent), it won't show much on the back of the flowers. If the visible knot still bothers you, you can easily add a flower to the back of each one. This way, the bow will be hidden between the two flowers. In this case, take an extra bag of four small flowers.

These pearly flower earrings are discreet and elegant. Whether you're attending a formal event or simply want to add a touch of freshness to your spring outfit, from a pastel midi dress to a simple white blouse, these earrings are the perfect choice. They're also lightweight and comfortable to wear all day long.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Cut 40 cm of thread. Thread through the back of the 10 mm flower. Thread 1 spacer bead and 1 Miyuki seed bead. Thread through the spacer and flower without threading through the seed bead. Pull on the end of the thread to place the set in the center of the thread.

Step 2

Thread one end of the wire through the last link of the earring. Tie a simple knot with both ends of the wire to attach the flower to the end of the chain.

Step 3

On one end of the thread, thread an 8 mm flower through the back of the flower, a spacer bead and a seed bead. Return to the spacer and flower. Pull the flower close to the 10 mm flower. Make a simple knot with the two ends of the thread. Do the same on the other end of the thread and finish by tying three knots, then cut off the excess thread.

Step 4

Keep the two pieces of wire, as they will enable you to attach the other two flowers. Thread an 8 mm flower, a spacer bead and a seed bead. Thread through the spacer and flower and place in the center of the thread. Pass one end of the thread through a link slightly below the middle of the chain and tie a double knot. Trim the excess wire to within 1 mm of the knot. Apply a little glue to the knot. If you don't want to see the knot, instead of cutting and tying the knot, re-string the bead chain and place it on the back of the first flower. Then tie your double knot. To do this, you'll need to buy an extra bag of flowers.

Step 5

Attach another flower a little higher up the chain.
