What is rattan? Rattan is a vine that's both flexible and robust, making it ideal for creating trendy decorative objects and accessories. So, if you're tempted, why not try your hand at creative basketrywith this tutorial on how to work with rattan.

Cut 8 lengths of 30 cm from your 3 mm rattan pith. Soak for 15 minutes in lukewarm water.

On 4 of the 8 lengths, insert the tip of a scalpel in the middle to open the wicker over a length of 4 cm.

Pass the untouched lengths through the split lengths.

Take 1.5 mm wicker pith strands without cutting them. Soak them in water for 10 minutes. Fold it in the middle and wrap one of the 4 parts of your wicker cross around it, laying it on top and then twisting it underneath.

The strand above will pass over the second branch of the cross, and the other below. The strand that was underneath is now on top, alternating until the end. Make 2 turns like this, then for the third turn, separate the 4 strands of the cross into 2. For the third turn, separate all the strands.

Continue in this way, adding new strands until you have a diameter of around 24 cm. To make a connection, the new strand is placed under the old strand. To complete the background, sew and stitch the strands into the weave.

Cut off any protruding 3 mm strands, leaving about 5 mm to prevent the braided strands from sticking out.

Cut 16 lengths of 20 cm from 3 mm wicker. Soak them, then place each one underneath between the strands you cut in the previous step.

Using a glue gun, coat the back of your mirror, then place it on your weave. This step must be done quickly, because if the glue cools, it won't work. Other strong glues can be used.

Cut a length of woollen yarn to fit around the mirror twice. Weave 2 turns around the loops in the same way as with the rattan. Finish with a hidden double knot on the back. You can run a thread around the back of your mirror to hang it wherever you like.
