What is Raysin imitation ceramic powder?

Looking for original jewelry with a modern, artisanal look? This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to create earrings using Raysin, an ultra-trendy molding powder that perfectly imitates ceramic... without firing!

Raysin is a simple, affordable alternative for creating decorative shapes with a matt, mineral finish. In this DIY, you'll discover how to mold graphic shapes in a silicone mold, sand and drill them, then mount them as earrings with gold or silver primers.

You can keep the ultra-sober ceramic white effect, or customize your pieces with paint, marble effects or even inclusions. Each pair becomes a unique creation in your own image.

Raysin powder is a mineral powder similar to plaster, but much more resistant. It's very simple to prepare: mix with water, and color pigments if required, then pour into a silicone mold. After around 30 minutes, the mold hardens and can be removed from the mold. However, it remains fragile for the first few days: it will take between 2 and 8 days of air-drying for it to reach its final solidity.

Raysin powder is available in two versions: Raysin 100, which is softer, and Raysin 200, which is more resistant and better suited to the creation of jewelry.

In this tutorial, we've used Raysin 200, which is more durable once fully dried. However, it remains brittle in the event of impact, such as a fall or crushing. For added strength, you can apply a thin layer of UV LED resin to your creations. Note: this will alter the matte, mineral appearance of the jewel.

If you want to create colorful, symmetrical earrings, you'll need two identical, perfectly matched shapes. You have two options:

  • Buy two identical molds to cast both pieces at the same time,
  • Or use a precision balance to dose exactly the same quantities of pigment into two separate preparations.

Remember to protect your work surface: pigments can stain for a long time. And use a stable tray to move your mold without risk of spilling the mixture.

Tutorial steps

Step 1
Earrings tutorial with Raysin Casting Powder imitation ceramic : Step 1

The quantities of powder and water are indicated on the back of the packaging. To fill 4 to 5 small to medium sized shapes of the mould used in this tutorial you will need: 5 gr of powder + 2 gr of water (+ pigments) or 2.5 teaspoons of powder + 1 teaspoon of water (+ pigments).

However, if the paste is not liquid enough, add a small amount of water.

Here is a photo example of different shades in relation to the quantity of pigments.

Disc n°1 : 0,5 gr of pigment for 5 gr of powder.

Disc n°2: 0,25 gr of pigment for 5 gr of powder.

Disc n°3 : 0,12 gr of pigment for 5 gr of powder.

The colour is very saturated when the part is wet. The more the piece dries, the more the colour will lighten. It is necessary to wait several days before having the final colour.

Put the liquid in the mould shapes with the spatula. Once everything is poured, take your tray and gently tap it on the table to bring up the bubbles.

Wait 1 hour before unmoulding as the piece is still fragile after 30 minutes.

Step 2

After a minimum of 48 hours drying time, you can varnish the room if you wish. This will protect it a little more from water, which can still make it brittle, dust and dirt stains. The surface is matt and porous, so it can get dirty quickly. However, you can choose to leave it matt. In this case be careful and hang them on a jewellery display rather than in a box among other jewellery.

In the photo you have two examples of shapes with and without varnish. The white triangle on the left is without varnish and the one on the right has two layers of varnish. It looks a bit like ceramic.

The orange triangle on the left has two layers of glaze as well and the one on the right is unglazed. You can see that the glaze saturates the colour of the pigment as if the shape was wet again. The left triangle has some marks on the surface. We talk about this in the next step.

Step 3

You can embellish the coins with gold leaf. Before pouring the liquid into the mould, lay small pieces of gold leaf against the mould, flattening it well. Don't put too much, because not all the gold material will stick anyway and this will create cracks like what happened to the varnished triangle shown above and the oval charm on the left. You won't be able to put much gold and avoid the edges. Put some only on flat surfaces. You can also add more with sheet metal glue afterwards.

Step 4

You can also create shapes with color mixes. Wait 30 minutes for the first colour to dry before pouring in the second colour and so on.

Step 5

With the remaining shavings of your shapes you can create jewellery with a terrazzo effect. Place the shavings cut into small pieces at the bottom of the mould and then place the liquid mixture gently on top so that the shavings do not move to the sides. Leave to harden for 1 hour then remove from the mould. Then allow to harden for a few hours again before sanding the top to reveal the strips of Coloured Raysin powder.

Step 6

Once you have sanded the backs of your pieces, they are dry and if you have decided to varnish them, you can proceed to the assembly. Use large rings because the thickness of the shapes is important and you risk damaging the piece if you force with the pliers to close them.

You can also add small shapes to glue on them to decorate them, or associate them with charms.
