What is Raysin imitation ceramic powder?
Looking for original jewelry with a modern, artisanal look? This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to create earrings using Raysin, an ultra-trendy molding powder that perfectly imitates ceramic... without firing!
Raysin is a simple, affordable alternative for creating decorative shapes with a matt, mineral finish. In this DIY, you'll discover how to mold graphic shapes in a silicone mold, sand and drill them, then mount them as earrings with gold or silver primers.
You can keep the ultra-sober ceramic white effect, or customize your pieces with paint, marble effects or even inclusions. Each pair becomes a unique creation in your own image.
Raysin powder is a mineral powder similar to plaster, but much more resistant. It's very simple to prepare: mix with water, and color pigments if required, then pour into a silicone mold. After around 30 minutes, the mold hardens and can be removed from the mold. However, it remains fragile for the first few days: it will take between 2 and 8 days of air-drying for it to reach its final solidity.
Raysin powder is available in two versions: Raysin 100, which is softer, and Raysin 200, which is more resistant and better suited to the creation of jewelry.
In this tutorial, we've used Raysin 200, which is more durable once fully dried. However, it remains brittle in the event of impact, such as a fall or crushing. For added strength, you can apply a thin layer of UV LED resin to your creations. Note: this will alter the matte, mineral appearance of the jewel.
If you want to create colorful, symmetrical earrings, you'll need two identical, perfectly matched shapes. You have two options:
- Buy two identical molds to cast both pieces at the same time,
- Or use a precision balance to dose exactly the same quantities of pigment into two separate preparations.
Remember to protect your work surface: pigments can stain for a long time. And use a stable tray to move your mold without risk of spilling the mixture.
