Hammering a metal plate is an easy technique to bring texture to a metal whether it is brass, copper, aluminum or silver... Simply strike a metal plate with a hammer to add relief or smooth it out.
To achieve a nice hammering, the material is important. You can't use just any hammer and risk damaging your piece.
Be careful how you hold your hammer. To avoid injury, hold your hammer with your full hand (without putting your index finger along the handle) and place your hand at the end of the handle to have more strength and a better leverage arm.

If you want to work with metal after hammering it, you will have to anneal it so that it regains its malleability.
