How do you hold a part for crimping?

Have you heard of thermo-loc? This innovative material is designed to hold workpieces firmly in place during crimping, engraving or polishing. It replaces crimping cement. It is particularly recommended for irregular or fragile workpieces.

It comes in the form of gray sticks. Why this color? Grey is the ideal color to keep your eyes from tiring during long shifts in your workshop. So you can stay focused and precise, even during long sessions.
Thermo-loc is made from a special thermoplastic resin, which becomes malleable when heated.

As well as being very easy to use, it has many advantages: it's non-toxic, so it's kind to the environment and to your health. It's a great alternative to wax, as it doesn't leave marks or damage parts. It's also infinitely reusable.

1. Shaping thermo-loc
   
   To use thermo-loc sticks, the first step is to heat them. There are two ways to do this:

   - Cut the sticks into small pieces using a pair of scissors. Plunge them into a container of very hot water until they soften. Don't use paper towels to wipe off the excess water, as it will stick to the thermo-loc. Instead, wipe off the water with a cloth or an old T-shirt you no longer need.

   - Use a microwave oven. Place small pieces on a silicone mat to avoid damaging the material. Alternatively, use a silicone mold like the one shown in our video. Melt the thermo-loc in 10-second increments, checking each time that it has melted sufficiently.

   In both cases, be careful not to burn yourself during these operations.

2. Wedging the part in the thermo-loc
   
   Once the thermo-loc has been heated, it becomes soft and malleable like modeling clay. Shape it around the workpiece. Make sure it's securely in place, then let it air-cool to harden and hold the part firmly in place.

3. Crimp or engrave
   
   With the part securely in place, you can work in complete safety. The thermo-loc material does not adhere to the jeweler's block. To make your work easier, don't hesitate to use a hand vise, which will give you extra stability.

4. Removing the piece
   
   Once you've finished your work, heat the Thermo-Loc to remove the piece. It can then be reshaped for further use.
