How to solder gold filled (rolled gold)?

Gold filled is ideal for jewelry assembly, thanks to its attractive primers and components. But for designers who want to go one step further, it offers even more creative possibilities, as it can also be cut with the bocfil, engraved with coin punches or the Dremel Engraver, and soldered.
However, it's important to know the correct method for brazing gold filled without damaging it. Brazing Gold Filled is a fairly complex technique. But don't panic! Here are a few tips to help you get the job done.

How to braze gold filled without damaging it?

  • Keep the number of solder joints to a minimum. Ideally, try to make one solder joint, or even two if they're far apart.
  • Be quick and efficient when soldering. Keep the flame moving and withdraw it quickly once the weld is made.
  • Heat with a rather soft flame (also called a reducing flame), i.e. one with little oxygen input.
  • Do not anneal your gold-filled part.

To solder gold filled parts, you'll need 9-carat gold solder. It also works with 12K or 14K weak gold solder.

MISTAKES to avoid when brazing

  • Watch out for excess solder when soldering. If you use too much brazing alloy, it may overflow. You'll need to file off the excess, which is not advisable with Gold Filled. For example, make the flakes as small as possible, to avoid dripping.
  • Gold-filled is sensitive to heat, which can cause it to warp. In the worst case, the different layers of metal that make it up could melt and mix.
Bear in mind that too much heat will change the color of the metal. It's best to keep an eye on the color of the gold filled while soldering.
