How do you make a Square Stitch bracelet?
Square stitch is a needle beading technique that resembles weaving on a loom. It has the advantage of being quick to make and very easy to learn. It’s a beading technique that’ s accessible to beginners.
Using this technique, you’ll make a small Miyuki-bead bracelet featuring a few mini hematite beads, a PureCrystal DeLite cabochon from the Fall/Winter 2019–2020 collection, and 2 mm PureCrystal beads.
Make a bracelet that fits snugly around your wrist, or add an extension chain as shown in the examples below. Then personalize these chains with a charm of your choice. Here, we’ve used a charm designed in-house at Perles&Co!

Set the cabochon using flat-nose pliers; to do this, fold the prongs of the setting over the cabochon. Cut 60 cm of wire and thread it onto a needle. Thread the needle through the holes in the setting, thread on a small rectangular hematite bead, and thread the needle through the other two holes in the setting. Leave about 10 cm of thread at the end.
Thread a new rectangular mini-hematite bead, pass it through the first holes of the setting, through the first rectangular mini-hematite bead, through the second holes of the setting, through the second rectangular mini-hematite bead, and one last time through the first holes of the setting and the first rectangular mini-hematite bead. Tighten.
Thread 3 Miyuki Delica beads and pass the thread through the rectangular mini-hematite bead from the other side. Thread through the 3 beads again, then through the mini hematite bead, and one last time through the 3 beads. You’ve just made a square stitch. This technique can be done bead by bead, or with several beads at once if a larger bead helps keep them straight.
Thread 3 new Delica beads and repeat step 3, passing the thread through the 3 beads you threaded earlier and the 3 new ones. Continue weaving the beads in this manner.
Just like in the photo, you’ll need to weave a row of 2 mini-hematite cube beads. They’re strung the same way as the 2 mm PureCrystal pearl beads. The bracelet ends in a point. To create this point, reduce the number of beads per row. Add just two Delica beads, then a single one. Take a new strand of thread, thread it through the beads in the weave to secure it, then thread it back through the second mini-hematite rectangular bead, zigzagging through the beads. Weave the second section of the bracelet.
Cut two pieces of chain, each about 4 cm long. You may want to use gold-plated or Gold Filled chain for better durability. Thread the needle through a loop at the end of one piece of chain. Then thread it back through the last bead from the other side.
Repeat the process, then tuck the thread into the weave and cut it. Do the same on the other side of the bracelet.
Attach the carabiner to the chain using an open ring. Adjust the length of the extension chain. Remove the drop from the extension chain if you wish, and replace it with the small gold leaf charm. Connect the extension chain to the main chain using a ring.
Bonus: You can also make this bracelet in other colors. Below is a khaki version.
The materials for the green bracelet are also listed below. They include 11/0 Avocado and Alabaster Mica Delicas, 2x2 mm mini hematite cubes and golden rectangles, and 2 mm PureCrystal beads.
