How do I attach a clasp to a bracelet made on a loom?

This miyuki loom weaving chart covers several advanced loom weaving techniques. This is not a beginner tutorial. If you want to make your first loom bracelet, go to one of these two tutorials to practice and learn the basics:

The specifics of this weave are four:

  1. The decrease on loom
  2. Adapting the length of the bracelet to your wrist
  3. Attaching flowers in a weave of beads
  4. Attach a magnetic ring clasp

This bracelet is made with Miyuki delicas 11/0. 11/0 being the size of the beads, delicas the name of the shape of the beads given by Miyuki, the manufacturer. If you want to use other kind of beads, we can't tell you if the clasp will be compatible with this weaving pattern. It is better to use the delicas in this tutorial, or other colors of 11/0 delicas. They come in hundreds of different colors so you can create almost anything. Hard to choose from all these colors? Check out our assortments of Miyuki delicas 11/0 beads.

Tutorial steps

Step 1

Determine the size of your bracelet:Measure your wrist. Add 1.5 cm to this measurement to avoid having a bracelet too tight. The clasp is about 1 cm wide. You will need to weave a bracelet (excluding the clasp) the size of your wrist + 0.5 cm.

Here, my wrist size is 15 cm. So I wove about 15.5 cm of beads. That is 93 beads. If your wrist is 16 cm, you need a 16.5 cm weave.

Step 2

Adapt the pattern to your size: Is the pattern too small or too big for you? Remove or add chevrons on the sides by modifying the pattern you printed. To remove them, cross them out with a marker. To add more, try to keep it in mind or change the ending by redrawing the coloring boxes. 10 beads are about 1.7 cm. So 1.7/10 = 0.17. Each row of beads removed or added will change the measurement by 1.7 mm.

In the case of our example with a 16 cm wrist. You will need to add 16.5-15.5 cm = 1 cm. You will change both sides, so you need to add 0.5 cm on both sides of the bracelet with the chevrons. 0.5/0.17 = 2.94 = 3 beads. So you need to add a 3 beads wide chevron on each side.

Step 3

Now that you have your pattern ready and you have verified that your loom is long enough, you will be able to attach the 10 threads to the loom. Then attach your weaving thread, leaving 25 cm of thread end to attach the clasp a little later. Start weaving the 3rd or 4th row first. Then a few more rows.

Step 4

Remove the needle from the weaving thread and put the 25 cm piece of thread on it. Now that the threads have the right spacing thanks to the rows of woven beads, we can make the decrease. Remove one bead from each side and center them on the weaving threads. Your thread with the needle will also go over the side of the unbeaded threads to bring them closer to the beads. Go back and forth 2 times to make sure the threads on the sides stick together.

Step 5

We will attach the clasp. Place the first ring in the first slot between 2 threads. Pass the needle through the ring, under the weaving threads. Thread the 5 beads of the row and pass through the second ring of the clasp, positioned in the space of the last two threads. Pull slightly and place the beads correctly. Pass through the rings and beads again over the loom threads. Make a second round trip.

Step 6

Remove the needle from the end of the thread and continue weaving normally with the other thread. The flowers are woven like the clasp. String the first 4 beads of the row, place the flower in the center, with the ring facing the right way. Pass through the flower, string the last 4 beads and iron through the whole over the loom threads.

Step 7

If your thread is too short, run it through the woven beads several times to catch it and cut it off. Pick up a new thread and clamp it in the same way before picking up where you left off.

Step 8

Repeat steps 4 and 5 to attach the second part of the clasp. Pay attention to the direction of the clasp!

Step 9

Remove the bracelet from the loom, cutting the threads and keeping as much of the thread length as possible. Tuck and wedge all the threads into the weave, one by one. After that, the bracelet will be finished, cheer up!

Bonjour,
